Dense fog advisories have been issued for Lake and Cook counties in northeast Illinois until   4 a.m. Saturday morning. Visabilities are dropping to less than 1/4 mile across much of Chicago late this Friday evening. At 11 pm the visibility at O'Hare was 1/2 mile, while Wheeling and Waukegan reported 1/4 mile.  The dense fog continues north into Wisconsin with much of the eastern portion of that state socked in with near zero visibility.

The fog is expected to improve during the overnight hours as an area of showers and thunderstorms move in from Indiana. As these storm arrive, visibilities should increase as the fog dissipates. 

Caution is advised as the dense fog will hinder driving.

Shortly before 9:15 p.m. radar indicated a pronounced weakening in the thunderstorm activity that have been moving through the Chicago area. The thunderstorms should continue to weaken and they move north into Lake County and Lake Michigan. 

Earlier this evening the storms unleashed a barrage of small hail, heavy rain and produced vivid lightning displays.
Late reports indicate pea-sized hail at Melrose Park shortly after 8:35 p.m, near O'Hare Airport near the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Northwest Highway and in Morton Grove.

Thunderstorms continue to move north through northern Cook County and are starting to show signs of weakening as nighttime cooling continues. One area of thunderstorms is moving into southern Lake County Illinois and another area is moving through the central portion of Chicago.

Small hail and heavy rain can be expected as these storms pass through. An overall decrease in storms and intensiy can be expected during the next hour. 
Latest radar trends show an area of thunderstorms that are producing hail from 1/4- 3/4 inches in diameter alongwith heavy rainfall and a lot of lightning moving into northwest Cook County from Du Page County. Areas likely to be hit with these thunderstorms include Palatine, Elk Grove Village, Mt. Prospect, Prospect Heights, Wheeling and Arlington Heights.
 

Thunderstorms continue in the Chcgo area currently targeting the western suburbs. 1/4 inch hail hail fell at Oak Brook around 820 pm and at Carol Stream 1/2 inch diameter fell for about 2-3 minutes in a heavy thunderstorm just before 8:15 pm. While these thunderstorms are not severe, they are producing a lot of small hail, vivid lightning and very heavy rainfall.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to move north across the Chicago area this evening. One band of thunderstorms extended from eastern Will County through eastern Du Page County into northwestern Cook County.

Around 8 pm pea-sized hail was reported at Bolingbrook and in Naperville where in 5 minutes it covered the ground.

At 8:15 p.m. larger hail up to 3/4 inch in diameter was reported at Glen Ellyn along with a lot of lightning and intense rainfall.
Dense fog shrouds almost the entire Chicago metropolitan area late this evening. Visibilities are generally less than 1/4 mile and as low as 1/8 or 1/16 of a mile in many areas. The fog is expected to persist through the night and linger well into Tuesday morning.  The fog has impacted both road and air travel Monday evening and travelers should check with their airlines for the statues of Tuesday morning flights. 

A dense fog advisory remain in effect for the entire Chicago area through 10 am Tuesday morning.

Lake and Porter counties in Indiana next in line for snow

At 11:30 pm the band of snow was clearing the south tip of Lake Michigan and about to enter Lake County and Porter counties in northwest Indiana. Heavy rates of snowfall, near zero visiblity and even thunder and lightning can be expected as the band of  snow moves through the area.

Reports from around the city indicate travel times at least 5 times longer than they normally area this late in the evening. Traffic is moving at only 10 mph on many area expressways.

Heavy thundersnow reported at Midway Airport

At 11:15 p.m. weather observer Frank Wachowski reported heavy snow at Midway acconpanied by thunder and lightning. The visiblity there was 1/4 mile.

Heavy snow reaches Joliet area

At 11 pm it was snowing heavily in the Joliet area with the visibility at 1/4 mile. The area of snow was moving south through Cook and Will counties. Conditions were slowly improving from the north across the north and central portions of the Chicago area.  Whiteout conditions and thunder and lightning were still accompanying the snow.
