For the second year in a row Chicagoans will celebrate a Mother’s Day with high temperatures in the 80s. Today’s forecast high of 82º will fall short of the 88º reached on Mother’s day last year, which turned out to be Chicago’s second warmest on record, surpassed only by the 89º high recorded on the holiday in 1956. This afternoon’s low 80s will represent a dramatic 40º temperature increase for areas near the lake that shivered through a chilly, fog shrouded Saturday afternoon with temps stuck in the lower 40s.
Today marks the start of what promises to be a warm week for Chicago with daily highs in the 70s and 80s expected in areas away from the lake. In addition, increased humidity levels should generate much needed precipitation in what is turning out to be an unusually dry spring. Area gardeners and farmers are hopeful that the several potential thunderstorm periods in upcoming days will help erode the growing moisture deficits.
