From Villainous Toys to Clothing Wars, Or, Why We Love TWOP's Supernatural Forums

We have to admit we spend an inordinate amount of time on Television Without Pity – but dude, it's for our jobs! We have to keep up with what people are saying about all these CW shows! We adore Demian's recaps of Supernatural episodes – even when we don't agree with his opinions (He hates the Dean!Angst, while we could eat it up with a spoon) we love to read what he has to say. If you haven't read them before, check them out – they're long, but oh so worth it.

But where we really waste -- er, that is to say, invest – the most time is in the Supernatural forums, especially the section called "The Quest." That's where you'll find fanfic, art, games, writing, and other assorted forms of Supernatural-inspired madness.

Among the recent insanity: A Twelve Days of Supernatural carol-writing escapade; a collection of haiku, limericks and some surprisingly moving poetry; caption contests; and a strange, somewhat masochistic game where you take someone's wish for what would happen on the show and twist it in a suitably Kripke-esque fashion.

The twisted genius of the TWOP forum-dwellers really comes out in Text Me: Letters to the Characters. In this thread, fans give voice to some of the undersung players who
make this show great – like the Metallicar, various pieces of clothing, weapons, accessories, villainous toys, and more. The folks who contribute are possibly certifiable -- and endlessly entertaining.

For example, check out the war between the clothing and the dirty socks, featuring John's Leather Jacket, various t-shirts and hoodies, possible demonic possession, fiendish M&Ms, and the sweetest little greyhound t-shirt you ever did meet.

Or jump in at the saga of the Frisky Armadillo, who our faithful Winchester accoutrements try to rescue from the fiendish plans of several possessed kitchen appliances and the evil cymbal monkey.

Or you could check out the introduction of Dean's rosary, a sweet Catholic girl who engages in a tempestuous romance with Dean's mysterious necklace, resulting in little jewelry babies, kidnappings, possessions, and more.

Who are the people writing these short messages, and how do they come up with this stuff? We have no idea – but we hope they don't stop any time soon.

Demian's recaps are okay (much better than Drunken Bee's last year!) but I think the Supernatural recaps at fandomtalk.com are much funnier. Can't say anything about their forums though because I don't get involved in any forums.

I personally love TWOP and Demians recaps crack me up everytime even when I don't necessarily agree with his take on things. I'm with you guys on totally fangirling Raoul.

As for the TWOP criticisms, sure there's a lot of squee, but there's also tons of interesting and intellligent discussion of the characters, the show and its themes. And of course some of the Quest threads are awesomely creative. I agree that there are definitely more Dean/Jensen fans on those forums but there are also plenty of Sam/Jared fans who are insightful, witty and just as devoted to their guy.

I do find it interesting that most of the criticisms of TWOP revolves around the Dean/Jensen love. I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised when fans feel the need to defend their favorite actor/character if they feel like he's being criticized or be protective of him when the writing doesn't do him justice. It's the nature of fan forums and I've seen that kind of commentary for both Sam and Dean at TWOP.

Things usually only get heated over there when DeanFans are accused of being rabid and biased. As if Sam fans aren't capable of the same thing -- something that's more than apparent over at the Supernatural.tv forums. For the record, I have absolutely no a problem with Supernatural.tv's Sam bias because again, hello, it's fan site with its own unique culture just like TWOP.

Also the so-called Dean-mania isn't limited to TWOP. Most of the responses to the Supernatural posts on The CW Source are also full of Dean/Jensen squee. Of course there's Sam/Jared love too, but Dean just seems to be a more popular character which makes sense to me since he's set up as the charismatic Han Solo to Sam's more soulful Luke Skywalker.

All I can infer is that people who tend to get irritated with TWOP are probably bigger fans of Sam/Jared than Dean/Jensen, but somehow never seem to admit that when they're bashing the site or Demian, who ironically, tends to be a more overt Jared/Sam fanguy.

And yes I am a Dean/Jensen and TWOP fan...which BTW doesn't mean I can't love Sam and appreciate Jared's talent.

I don't mean to offend anyone with my rambling but I do feel that some of the posting that has been going on here is a bit disingenuous.

Demian & the TWoP forums are lots of fun - I cruise by there when I need a laugh. :)

I love TWOP. People there post intelligently, creatively, humorously -- and in general they understand basic punctuation, spelling, and grammar. I'm glad the CW likes it too -- after reading through several Supernatural sites, TWOP's is the only one I'll regularly visit (and no, not just for the Dean love!).

I can't speak for the other sub forums, but the SPN forum is different. You're accused of "making it personal" if you upset the Dean faithful. I've seen it happen to posters who weren't making it personal who wanted others to back up an opinion when they were upset about Dean's character not getting enough attention. I've seen it if anyone makes even a little joke in the Jensen threads or criticizing the way the actor does an interview. Like I said, TWOP SPN is fine for the fan worshipping girls, but there's no place for a serious guy there.

*shrugs* Basically, you can have any opinion you like, but you have to be ready to defend it. That goes for absolutely anyone, including the people takestani was talking about. So, if you're gonna go into the JA thread and say he's untalented, dull, stupid, developmentally impaired or that he's a jerk or a diva, yeah... you're not gonna find a lot of agreement. Posters may even turn it into something to be mocked (ie, the kitten-juggling and fake rumors, and the eulogizing of the farts), in the sarcastic spirit of the site. Are you gonna cry about it, or are you gonna back up what you said? Free speech doesn't mean everyone's gotta agree with you, and believe me, if you came into that thread and talked about his acting rather than his face, you'd get plenty of discussion too (so, this "it's not for guys" thing doesn't fly with me). TWoP's fantastic because of the varying opinions, and I very much enjoy honing my arguments on the challenges I receive from others. It's fun, and the mod doesn't let it get personal. People who tell others what to think, or engage in more discussion about other posters than about the show, aren't long for the site. That, to me, is emphatically a good thing.

Intelligent and creative? Maybe in some of the other forums. You can have a negative opinion at TWOP all right, if it's the correct negative opinion. God forbid you criticize one of the actors. Read the Jensen Ackles thread where they talk about bottling the man's farts and then tell me how creative and intelligent that forum is. I don't need an all squee forum, thank you. Just one where the actors aren't worshipped as deities. That's annoying to a guy who'd like to discuss the brothers because they're so real. That's how brothers talk to each other, darnit. TV shows never get it. This one does. It's TWOP where you can't discuss without the squee. There's no place for male fans at TWOP.

I'd be glad to go to another forum if the majority of posts there were half as intelligent and creative as the ones at TWOP. It says in the FAQs that it is not a fansite, it's a discussion/humor site, so people are allowed to have negative opinions, especially if they make them funny. If that's not your bag, fine, there are plenty of other forums that are pure squee, unflinchingly positive. TWOP has higher standards; the posters there are gonna call a spade a spade. I think it's a bit of an honor that little ol' Supernatural has gained any favor there at all -- the vast majority of shows there are merely (hilariously) mocked.

Sorry to go into the forum politics thing. Thanks CW Source for posting these links. I can't always keep up with the creative pursuits, so having a guide like this is much appreciated!

Apparently TWOP isn't to my tastes anymore. I just got kicked off the forum an hour ago. LOL! Without even a warning to my name, no less. The administrator thought I was trying to one up another poster, so goodbye to me. They must have seen my post below because it didn't take them long. How interesting. I was posting that Dean's character wasn't going to get shoved aside for Sam and repeated myself too often because the other girls were complaning that the mytharc didn't include Dean. Hmmmmm, there may be something to this "Dean-mania at TWOP" theory after all. Oh well. Life goes on. :)

Heh! There are some crazy brilliant people on TWoP Supernatural forums, including Demian. I think it's the smartest, most entertaining Supernatural site around.

TwoP isn't to everyone's taste, but there's certainly more than enough creative people and well thought out posts on there. And with a seemingly endless hiatus currently on, it's well, fun.

Oh, for pity's sake people! Every forum has it's good and bad points. This is not the place to bash each other's forums!

The forum listed here was listed due to some crazy fan activity being noted by the Source, not because it's any better or worse than any other forums. There is no need to drag this into an immature squabble over forum politics. This is freaking ridiculous!

What matters is that we are all fans of an awesome show, regardless of where, why and what we post. Please try and remember that, and leave the forum politics garbage on the forums.

The TWOP forums are not that great, there are so many better forums like at supernatural.tv

TWOP mods are a moody bunch. But Demian doesn't tend to play favorites based on what characters you like. I suppose it is only natural to be bitter when one has been banned from a board.

The Quest board is hysterical and creative. It's crazy. There is an older thread where people created Dean and Sam sims and would post describing their sims' activities. It was fantastic. Sims thread

The Jared thread on TWOP is not full of insults. I don't know what thread was being read but it's not the Jared thread. Alexis will cut anyone who insults Jared. The Jared's hair thread was created in a spirit of fun because it was thought Sam's ever changing mop of hair deserved it's own thread. People have also at different times discussed the show going a little crazy with the razors when Jensen's hair is so short you can see his scalp. The oompah loompah orange make-up and enforced tanning rituals are subjects of discussion as well. Dean and Sam work mostly at night. It is truly okay, nay even in character, if they are allowed to look a little pale. :)

If you visit the Dean thread and the Jensen thread there will naturally be much discussion about Jensen and Dean. The character threads will focus on the characters for which they are named. There is only one Dean thread. The actor threads are meant for gushing and fun. Much of the over the topness is on purpose. They also sometimes contain good conversations on the acting in between the silliness. There is also only one Jensen thread.

The board as a whole is not that biased towards Dean and Jensen. If Sam doesn't get speculated over quite as much it is more likely because he has a more predictable role within the narrative than a true bias. Fans are always more apt to build up discussions about, and worry more about the fates of, the characters whose paths are less set in stone.

People like what they like. Jensen has done a brilliant job with a character that could have easily been a shallow caricature in less capable hands. He deserves all the praise and attention he's gotten for it. He's been asked to carry off everything from the darkest of drama to quippy one-liners to the sappiest of melodrama, sometimes within a single episode, and has handled it with a deft and intelligent touch. More often than not when it falls down it is because of lack of subtlety in the writing, not the acting.

Supernatural.tv is no more unbiased than any other site. When they did board maintenance during the summer, the Dean and John boards there suddenly lost massive numbers of posts. Comparatively, the Sam board lost almost none. Previously the Dean board had had almost twice as many posts. They did a little house cleaning and somehow the Dean board ended up with almost a thousand fewer posts than the Sam board. The John board ended up even lower, probably lost almost 2/3's of it's posts. I stopped going to the site after that because it was such a blatant attempt at...I don't even know what. The Dean and John boards were no more likely to be off topic than the Sam board was. I used to read all of them, so that can't be the explanation.

Eh, TWOP isn't that great. I stopped lurking there (at least in the Supernatural forums) because the creativity couldn't compete with the Dean worship. Dean, Dean, Dean. Dean all the time. Jensen all the time. All stories have to center on Dean. Dean's being neglected if Sam has too many lines. It's an unjustice that Dean doesn't have a role in the mytharc. Dean's being cast aside because Sam's immune to mind control. Dean's being made insignificant because Sam has powers and he doesn't. Dean's being cast aside if he isn't on screen every single minute. Kripke hates Dean. Sam is Kripke's Mary Sue so he must hate Dean. Kripke compares Dean to Han Solo and Han Solo was useless in "Return of the Jedi" while Luke/Sam and Leia/Jo got all the glory. Blah blah blah blah blah. It's like they keep scorecards to tally the kills, cool lines, and kick ass moves for each character and no, Demian doesn't like the show much. His reviews are funny, but don't let that fool you into thinking he actually likes what he reviews. He's called the posters bit bit worshipping, hysterical adolescent girls. There are guys who like this show who don't have to extoll the virtues of Jensen's ass every single minute of the day. TWOP's too damn exhausting to enjoy the Quest forum and the Dean mania's scary as hell. They were celebrating the man's farts in one of their worship threads. Leave me out of it.

I love it! Keep it up!

I love the TWoP forums and I find Demian's recaps pretty damn funny. I take them with a grain of salt anyway(Hee, get it? Rock salt!) I've never been kicked of the boards but I know alot of people b*@%$h about that happening to them. And Sammy/Jared has his own threads so I'm not sure why you would say they forums are more focused on Dean/Jensen. The fans that ARE on his Sam/Jared's threads ARE damn devoted! (alexias WILL cut you!)

Supernatural rules and Kripke rocks!

I'm sorry but TWOP is not exactly a good forum.
At least the Supernatural TWOP.
I don't like Demian, he always complain about the show.

The Jared SPN thread in TWOP is not funny and full of offensive remarks.
The say Jared has bad hair, Jared looks like a giraffe, Jared can't act.

I whope you CW people will take a look at other forums where there's intelligent criticism and where the fans really love the show and both actors.

I wouldn't call Supernatural TV any more unbiased than TWOP aside from Demian's anti-angst leanings. Most of the rabid Sam fans tend to populate that site, while many of the hardcore Dean fans gravitate to TWOP. Demian himself is a pretty blatant Jared/Sam dude so I would say it all evens out in the wash.

But the Text Me threads are definitely my favorite. Anyone who hasn't read it should really go back to the beginning cuz some of the early clothing wars between the Dean's leather jacket and the army jacket are also hysterical.

It's not that Raoul the gay dragon isn't funny. He's hysterical, but it's a drag that his creator doesn't like the brotherly moments of Supernatural by his own admission. Dee boy calls it nothing but pretty brothers shooting monsters with rock salt. If he doesn't like the brotherly moments, how much can he like the show? Not much if you take a lurk over at TWOP and listen to the guy. Enough about him, though. The forums are great. The posters are crazy mofos for that luscious Dean but they make me laugh in a good way. Talk about devoted. It's just a few mods who are the problem. Count me as another of the TWOP banished. We're quite the group, huh? I saw a video over there called "Carol of the Supernatural." Can't say I know who edited it, would love to be able to register again and find out who put it together, but that's not the TWOP way if you sneeze too loud and run afoul of a mod in a bad mood. Eh, what can you do?

Six gun porn sce-enes,
Fiiiiiive shred-ded thiiiiiighs!"
Four stupid towels,
Three scared intruders,
Two sleeping boys,
And free Latina porn on Tee-Vee!

They're a creative lot at that place. Couldn't be obsessed with a better show, though. Dean and Sam are the best brother pairing on the tv right now. Too much of a preoccupation with Dean over there, though. Jensen's a good looking man and a great character, but Sam needs some loving, too. Padalecki's growth as an actor between seasons was remarkable. If I didn't know better I'd swear he took an acting class over the summer. Why so little obsessive craziness over his masculine fortitude? Not enough gun porn of Sammy for us Sam fans.

Someone else here got thrown off of TWOP? We're a diverse bunch, aren't we? I got the final nail from the VM mod myself.

The people who wrote letters to the characters are certifiable? LOL! Now, now, now, let's not be mean. I'm glad I wasn't one of them--before I got kicked off the forums for some heinous offense like being a tad too mouthy or posting in the wrong thread or, heaven forgive me, both at the same time. TWOP is a little tight that way in the rules department. Don't ever mouth off even a little in its nuBSG forum. That mod has an itchy trigger finger if he even thinks you're not playing all nice nice with your fellow posters aka the Lee/Kara shippers aka the pansies. Heh. Good article, BTW. The Supernatural fans there are fun, but they are a tad *focused,* shall we say? :)

Ahh, Raoul. He's a funny reptile, but I have to agree he's a tad harsh on the brothers. Dean angst is scrumptiously delicious--delicious enough for me to give up that god awful Grey's Anatomy; Raoul's too finicky for my tastes. I tend to migrate to the other supernatural sites on the web myself. Raoul must be a Dr. McDreamy fan. That's why he's got an upset tummy all the time.

The Quest is rather a creative section of the forums. Scarily creative at times. The devotion to Mr. Kripke is pretty fun.

Like we said, takestani: We don't always agree with Demian, but we love his recaps. And Raoul the Big Gay Supernatural Dragon would be our TV-commentary boyfriend, were he not gay. And a dragon. And fictional. So many obstacles to our relationship!

And yes, Anon, we tried to link people to the beginning of the clothing saga -- from the introduction of the lisping Greyhound t-shirt, who we love most of all -- but there were some tech glitches. We'll try to fix them on Monday. In the meantime, for those who are interested, here are the links that got lost:

Clothing wars

Supernatural Haiku

go all the way back to the start of that letters thread and you'll find more clothign wars starting around pg 20. these people are crazy.
