Supernatural: Did You Get the Twist?
We’re feeling a little sheepish about this episode, because we totally didn’t see that final twist coming. There were a bunch of little details that sort of niggled at us, but we just didn’t put it together. What about you?
When we think about it, we should have known immediately that Molly wasn’t what she seemed. First bit of evidence: She looked suspiciously unscathed for being in a huge wreck without benefit of airbags. Second, we couldn’t for the life of us figure out why Dean wasn’t at least trying to hit on Molly. Sure, she was talking about her husband and was kind of weepy, but when have minor details like that stopped Dean? And yeah, he’s been brusque to the people they’d helped before, but never that mean to a seriously good-looking babe. Finally, Sam was so moist-eyed we were starting to think someone had killed his dog or something. Why would he be so weepy over a standard damsel in distress – before anything bad had happened to her? It just didn’t make sense.
Then, when we learned that Molly wasn’t just being menaced by a ghost, she was a ghost as well, it all came together. We finally realized that all the clues were there, and we just missed them. Hell, Dean kept throwing in obvious comments, like comparing Sam to the Ghost Whisperer. And still we missed it. Doh!
We think we missed what should have been obvious because we were busy being blown away by Tricia Helfer. Like we said earlier, we love her on Battlestar Galactica, so we were excited to hear she was coming on Supernatural. She did not disappoint. And when she started picking up ghost-hunting lore, we have to admit we started having grand visions of Molly being a new recruit to hunting. Come on, admit it—when she started asking Sam about the various uses of rock salt, you started to hope for the exact same thing, right? So that’s why we missed the obvious signs that Molly wouldn’t be sticking around. Yeah. That.
The other reason we think we missed Molly’s post-life status was that the other ghost, that of the vengeful farmer, was sufficiently gory that it didn’t occur to us that spirits don’t always have their guts falling out of their stomachs. He was pretty damn creepy – as was the hanging corpse of his grief-stricken wife. See, that’s what ghosts are supposed to look like.
Overall, we thought it was a good episode. It had a sort of gentle, meditative tone that snuck up on us. We have to admit, however, that the final image of Molly being absorbed by the bright light of the rising sun gave us Highway to Heaven flashbacks, and that’s not good. It was the one cheesy note in an otherwise good episode. Read a full recap!
What did you think? When did you figure out what was up with Molly? Did your heart break for her when she found out her husband had moved on? Did you find the episode kind of sweet, or overbearing and treacly? Did you think Sam was sensitive or soppy, and was Dean all-business or just kind of an ass? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Are you tring to get this awesome show canceled? I LOVE this show I look for it every thursday, but this season has been so broken up waiting 2,3 or4weeks for a new episode is killing me! I'm loyal as hell, I'm just scared the show just might be canceled due to schedule changes.

I'm with you, Lily.
Sometimes you need to delve below the surface. Look for the threads linking Roadkill to prior episodes. Forget that it was filmed through Molly's point of view. Watch Sam and Dean, their reactions and correlate it to what they have previously been through, how they reacted in those situations, and how they've been affected by the events in their lives.

For those of you who didn't like Roadkill I'd like to recommend rewatching it now that you have the knowledge that Molly is a spirit. Sam and Dean's personalities are exquisitely portrayed. Dean is remaining detached, professional, and focused on the job. Sam though professional and focused is moved by Molly's pain. He knows they have to tell her she's dead so he tries to gently lead her toward that realization. He tries to prepare her. And as we've seen before with Dean and other spirits or people, he has a few moments of sympathy which he quickly tries to squash. His statement that "she wasn't too bad, for a ghost" shows that he was touched by Molly's plight as much as he would allow himself to be. Remember, when they almost ran her over they realized she didn't know she was dead. This added a whole new dimension of pain for Sam. I know that not everyone who watches it a second time will like it but for me, I found it more heartbreaking the second time around.

Raelle Tucker executed the brothers opposing views beautifully in Roadkill. Previously, Sam & Dean's differences have been on faith healer, Lenore (Bloodlust), Andy (Simon Said), and God's will. Now add Molly to the list.
Dean's Perception: Molly was a thing that could turn vengeful at any moment. He didn't trust her, hence his coldness toward her throughout the episode. Remember: Dean believes in what he "sees". Until Molly moved on, he couldn't/wouldn't believe she was a "good/nonharming" spirit.
Sam's Perception: Molly was a being with human emotion. Sam wanted to "save" Molly, to help her. Sam's emotional state in Roadkill ties into his desperation to believe SN beings can be "saved". Helping Molly gave Sam hope for his own future.

Well said Daphne! Dean and Sam were very much in character. The characters are so well written and the acting so good that there has never been an episode I didn't like. I have my favorites of course but Jared and Jensen are a joy to watch in every episode. They can have me rolling on the floor one minute and in tears the next. Please CW, renew this show.

Boy, it almost seems like some of these people were watching a different episode than I was. This was an outstanding show. I did wonder how come we didn't see Sam and Dean working up a profile of the case but once the action started with Greeley I totally forgot that and got sucked into it. Sam and Dean were just their typical selves, Sammy still feels the loss of Jess and feels everyone else's pain. Dean closes himself off, distances himself and shuts down any emotions to avoid being hurt. Remeber "Devil's Trap" people? When the yellow eyed demon infected John (sigh!) he said that was Dean's m.o. to "mask the truth, mask all that nasty pain." That's how they are. This is a show of the highest caliber, quality talent all round, fresh, unique and original. Kudos to CW for putting it on and let's keep it going for another few years. Can't wait for the rest of the episodes, especially for Hell Breaks Loose. Hate all the long dry spells though. Why not bring out the DVD early summer so we can watch them all again, and again thru the long summer?

Supernatural is the best show on tv.....

I knew something was up with Molly, but didn't snap to till the guys told her that her husband was still ALIVE. That's when I knew that she was the one who had died. All the clues up to that point fell into place.
I really liked the episode. I don't always watch Supernatural since I'm really just tuned in for Smallville... but this one sucked me in.

Despite the correlations we were supposed to make this episode was nothing more than Supernatural 101, outlining their basic hunting m.o. and giving new viewers a crash course in ghost hunting. Yeah, Dean has been a dick plenty of times before but that's ALL this episode seemed to be showing, and, yeah, Sam is always the sensitive one but that's ALL he was here.
The episode was underwhelming and flat because we got it from Molly's point of view more or less and there just wasn't any of the usual spark or chemistry between the brothers.
They may have been in character but it was so BASIC that it was pretty hollow.

The point of this episode wasn't a twist ending. It was the brothers Winchester helping a being who was uncertain and frightened of crossing over. It was a foreshadowing to you know who's possible ghostly return.
I'm at a loss as to why anyone could possibly believe Sam and Dean were out of character. Where is this coming from? The episode was told from Molly's point of view. It's how she perceived the brothers. Sam met a person who had something terrible happen to her that's out of her control. Just like what happened to him by being possessed and what he fears will happen when the demon finally puts his plans into action. Of course Sam went into empathy overdrive--AS IS HIS HABIT. Of course Dean became detached. He distances himself from supernatural creatures. It isn't natural for him to feel empathy for them--AS IS HIS HABIT. He was doing a job. He knew that farmer Greeley was doing wrong and that's it. There was no pretty vampire Lenore being tortured and pulling back from attacking Sam to mitigate Dean's anger. Of course he acted like a dick.
Dean's acted like a dick before, more than once. TPTB were expecting the viewers to be able to put the pieces togther themselves without being spoonfed. Is that beyond Supernatural viewers? Perhaps it is. I saw nothing out of character from the two brothers.

I was underwhelmed. Tricia was great, they did a great job with Molly.
Unfortunately Dean and Sam were taken over by Pod People who looked like them but had personalities that would have been caricatures even at the beginning of Season 1. Sam was a weepy Drama Queen, Dean was an insensitive dick. I thought that thing in Tall Tales where Sam hugged the guy and told him he was too precious for this world was supposed to be an exaggeration. Because I could see the Sam in Roadkill doing just that.
Where was the complexity of character in Dean and Sam I've come to expect since the Pilot of the show? I feel sorry for people who may only have been tuning in for the first time because of Tricia because they would not have gotten a good sense of who Dean and Sam are as individuals or what their relationship is like.
I find it hard to believe Raelle Tucker wrote this episode. She wrote Dead in the Water, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, many other excellent episodes. Did they only give her 2 days to write this script? They've had newbie writers who wrote the characters better than this.

I guess it was a decent standalone episode but I was underwhelmed if not falt out bored. They couldn't have made it more obvious that she was spirit. Twist? Not sure it can even be considered that when they point it out ten times during the episode. And yes the light at the end annoyed me because not only was it taken strait out of Ghostwhisperer but it also kinda told the viewer what happens with spirits when they "die"... I'd rather be left in the dark. Also, both Sam and Dean felt strangely out of character even when interacting with each other. And for the first time did I feel the need to do more than roll my eyes at Sam... I was about ready to fast forward over his teary eyed talks. Seriously dude, get over it already.
Plus,it took forever for the episode to really start... actually it felt like it never really got started at all.
I did love the "fight in the car, last thing I said to him was Jerk" because? That could easily have been the Winchesters.

I liked this one well enough but I think it should have followed BUaBS instead of Tall Tales. Having two alternative POVs of the boys in a row (especially with all the unresolved tension left by Demonic Sammy and the long hiatus in the middle) made Roadkill feel less satisfying than it might have otherwise.
I think they could have held off on Tall Tales until after the Warewolf episode judging by the dirctor's cuts where the boys appear to be back to their boys-will-boys snarking. Can't wait for next week.

I'm in love with this episode!
I didn't see it coming until near the end.
I love it because you can watch it again knowing Molly is a ghost and enjoy it even more than the first time.
Yes, it was similar to some episodes of the fantastic season one and that's why I love it.
Urban legend, the boys solving a mistery and working together.
I wish all episodes were like this one!

I absolutely loved it! I thought it was really cool that they had a stand-alone episode like they use to in the 1st season. I thought TH did really great and of course so did Jensen and Jared. Another great episode of supernatural!!! Next week looks…. interesting, but good so I can’t wait!
Posted by: Abby | March 18, 2007 10:18 AM
This was a decent stand alone for new viewers, I guess, but I don't think it's necessarily a good thing that you would be able to take this episode and plop it down smack dab into season 1 with no trouble at all, as far as characterization.
Posted by: cindi | March 17, 2007 4:22 PM
I adored the episode. One of my favourites. I thought J2 did a great acting job too. I don't really get the bit about the boys being "mere caricatures" of themselves. They seemed in character to me? Especially when the reveal occured.
It was a refreshing episode, done very diferent from others in the series.
Also, TH was great. People are so hard on guest stars... silly people.

This episode was really good. I gelt soo bad for Molly at the end. I'm soo happy they Boys are Back and can't wait for next thursday!

I liked all the individual elements of this episode. Tricia Helfer was great. I liked the story told with a Molly POV, and even though I figured she was the ghost fairly early on, I still liked the way the twist was revealed. There were some good one-liners and finally the creepy atmospheric feel to the episode was really nicely done.
But somehow the episode as a whole just seemed underwhelming to me. Not sure why. But the whole time I was watching, I was thinking well that's good, that's well done, I should really be loving this, why am I not loving it? Somehow I just didn't feel it.
But I'm very glad the boys are back. I've missed them so and I'm dreading the next long-assed hiatus.

really enjoyed this episode and thought that both J2 and TH were great! While lacking in brotherly moments both boys shone when on screen. I loved watching Jared play Sam as he told Molly about how/why spirits stay on earth and it was all the more touching looking back when the twist was revealed! I have to say I did not see that twist coming...at first I thought that David was dead, then I thought that somehow the ghost had warped reality or something and stolen her life from her somehow...the reveal explained so much! Before that I was completely puzzled as to Dean's colder, all business attitude towards Molly, but after finding out that they knew she was dead, everything made sense! Looking back, I now understand why they chose the clips they did for the "Then and Now" intro, we see Dean, who sees the majority of things in black and white and Sam who sees many more shades of grey! This episode actually kind of reminded me of The Usual Suspects in that, if you didn't figure out what the twist was beforehand, all the pieces are brought together at the end - very well written.
One of the scenes that sticks out to me is the one with TH and JP where Molly asks Sam how someone so loving becomes something so wicked...I'm sure that's one questions Sam both wishes he knew the answer too and doesn't want to think about!
I think one of my favourite scenes, though, is where Sam tells Molly he knows what it's when you're stuck with someone in a car and start arguing and then we get this great shot on Dean's face, which just screams WTF!!!
I also really enjoyed the flashbacks of the boys researching the hunt...both of them throwing in ideas, picking up on the other's train of though, just like clockwork!
This ep. also had some great lines - not to mention Dean talking to his car again:
Dean: "Follow the creepy brick road."
Sam: "Don't...sugar coat it for her."
Molly: "Oh, thank God!"
Dean: "Just call me Dean."

Such a wonderful episode, all the actors did an amazing job.
And it's even better after watching it a second time now that I know Molly was a ghost!
That final scene is one of the best moments I ever saw on tv.
I love this show!

Wasn't too impressed by this episode. It wasn't anything special, in my opinion.
However, I was one of the few people who didn't catch on that Molly was dead until they actually came out and told us. When they drove Molly to that house & her husband was inside, all I could think was, "Huh? I'm.. confused. I don't get it?" lol. My two friends that I was talking to on AIM at the time were confused as to what was going on as well.
Tricia did a pretty good job. I thought she was going to annoy me, but she didn't. Woohoo!

That was a great episode, I loved it very much.
The end was perfect and I don't think it was cheesy.
I don't understand why some fans didn't like it I think that maybe people jsut don't get that Sam and Dean were acting that way because they knew Molly was a ghost.
Tricia did very good, she's a great actress and yes I wish she wasn't dead so she could come back.
Not to actually hunt with the brothers but it would have been nice to see her her back.

Overall, I think the episode was great. And Jensen and Jared looked good too, as usual. I really didn't see the "there are two ghosts that haunt this highway" thing coming, so that was a shock..but otherwise yeah it was a good episode, i gasped once or twice, lets see whats next!

I write down clues when I watch the show and my number 3 clus was Molly spirit! And that was in the first 10mins of the show
Posted by: Bambi | March 16, 2007 5:58 PM
While this episode began slowly, overall I thought it was great. I didn't see Molly as a ghost *shrugs* Helfer was sufficiently engaging and played wonderfully off both the brothers. Her fear for her husband was palpable, which why I supposed I got sucked in.
I liked it being shown from her POV and like takestani said earlier, it was a very atmospheric episode. I think they did great.
Lots of love for the bright light here, especially since it wasn't shining out of Lana Lang's ass leading Molly onto heaven.
Posted by: Vee | March 16, 2007 5:53 PM
I liked it, even though I figured it out in the first 10 minutes. Missed the brotherly bits, though. I didn't think it was bad for first time viewers....but NEXT week looks GREAT!
Posted by: Mary | March 16, 2007 5:33 PM
Didn't like it all that much. Dean and Sam were too hardassy and schmoopy, respectively. I had friends over who had never seen the show before and they thought Dean was a dick and Sam was an overly emo wuss.
Not a good way to present the brothers to potential new viewers who may have been drawn in by Ms. Helfer's guest appearance, imo. They were too basic and without any of the development we've seen over the season. At least in the pilot, when I first tuned in, you could already see that there was more to Dean than meets the eye. You could already see some layers there. I didn't see any of that here, and as a result, my friends were not exactly enthralled by either brother. They did find the promo for next week promising though, so maybe there's still a chance for them to stick around until the end of the season.
Dean and Sam were supporting players in Molly's story and as a result the show was sorely lacking that normal brotherly connection/feel which is usually the heart of the show.
Ms. Helfer was better than I expected. It's just too bad that the brothers ended up being more or less mere caricatures of themselves.

There was a twist? Heh, it kind of stuns me that a lot of people didn't catch that she was a ghost right off the bat. It seemed obvious to me from the previouslies, so the rest of the ep seemed a little blatant and repetitive. I wish it had caught me by surprise, because I probably would have enjoyed the episode a lot more. It was an okay episode and I loved some of the lines and particularly Sam's befuddled "Don't... sugar coat it... Dean..." and Dean's "Whoops."
The white light at the end was a bit much. Felt like I was being hit over the head with a foam baseball bat while Raelle Tucker shouted "This! Is! Meaningful! Dammit!" in my ear. But I'm probably another one of those cynical people. :)
Tricia Helfer did a heck of a lot better than the woman in Usual Suspects. I'd had rock bottom hopes for her because the only thing I'd seen her as was host Canada's Next Top Model, and hadn't seen her in BSG. In any case, well done!
Posted by: Anonymous | March 16, 2007 4:44 PM
I really enjoyed the episode and the pace. I definitely didn't see it coming at all that she was a ghost but I liked watching it through her perspective. I thought it was well executed. A simple, straightforward episode. I didn't actually mind the ending. I didn't think it was cheezy.
Posted by: Elaine Swan | March 16, 2007 3:48 PM
I liked the idea of it, but not the execution. It just looked too "Green-Screen challenge" to me. But I'm a sad, cynical person who delights in stomping on the hopes and joys of others (or so I've been told when I rant about John) so your mileage may vary.
Posted by: sarah | March 16, 2007 3:07 PM
Takestani: I hear you on that.
The episode was written more through Molly's eyes than the Winchesters. Tricia did a great job.
Can't believe I didn't put two and two together when Dean mentioned they were on the road to hunt "ghosts".
Posted by: jas | March 16, 2007 3:05 PM
I think the point of the episode was Molly moving on, not so much the twist. It was calm, atmospheric, and meditative. I really enjoyed it and thought Ms. Helfer did a fantastic job. Awwww....no love for the bright light at the end? I liked it, darnit.
