Smallville: Chloe Joins the Comic

Call it art imitating life -- or maybe art imitating art, or comics imitating TV that's imitating comics. Whatever it is, it means Chloe Sullivan, reporter, sidekick and fan favorite on Smallville, will be showing up in the original source material -- DC's Superman comic.

Comics news source Newsarama reports that our favorite girl reporter will hit the comic in Superman #674, which hits the stores on March 12.

Writer and all-around comics god Kurt Busiek says Chloe is "a strong and useful and fun addition to the [comics] cast, one that would give us several elements to the cast structure that have been missing for years, but in a new and different way."

The comic-book Chloe won't be a carbon-copy of the TV Chloe, Busiek said: "‘Our’ Chloe is clearly inspired by the Smallville character, right down to wanting to be a journalist, and being roughly the same age as the Smallville character. And she’s still Lois’ cousin. Beyond that, though, since she’s obviously a different age than Clark and Lana, she’s got to be her own, unique character.

"[Chloe's] got to have a different spin, one that lets her occupy a different role from [comic-book Lois and Lana]. She's the younger sister of someone Clark went to school with, not a classmate of Clark's herself. As a result, she's the new intern at the Daily Planet, fresh out of journalism school and itching to make a name for herself. That'll make her clearly different from Lois and Lana, and at the same time more familiar to watchers of the show.”

I'm a big fan of Chloe on Smallville so I'm delighted that Allison Mack's portrayal of Chloe has inspired DC to use a character named after the one she plays.

But that's all it is; the character DC is describing has had virtually all of Chloe's most endearing traits stripped away. What makes Chloe so special is that she IS a contemporary of Clark Kent and IS Clark's best friend, confidante and supporter in addition to wanting to be a reporter at the Daily Planet from before we even met her. So this character is NOT going to be Chloe Sullivan from Smallville at all.

Taking all the great things about her away, the many things that make her unique leaves only a shell called Chloe Sullivan.

Interestingly, DC did make clear why Chloe had to be changed for the comics and that is because Chloe fulfills the role of Lois Lane on Smallville. She is too much like Lois Lane to co-exist in a universe with Lois Lane. So she had to be changed into something unrecognizable to those familiar with her on the Smallville series. It’s too bad because the Chloe in the comics will not be the Chloe I want to see but it says worlds about Chloe’s role on Smallville and who she really is there.

Busiek is an idiot. Why would I pay money to pick up a comic to see them reduce the character I love on the show to essentially nothing. It's a complete waste of time and an insult to Chloe fans. We're supposed to be grateful they're basically screwing the character and her fans over?

Well I'm not really interested in reading a comic with a Chloe that is not the one I love in Smallville. Just an X character with her name is not important to me!! I love my Chloe
