Supernatural Podcast: "Home"
Ah, the return of Papa Winchester (albeit, in hiding)! The big reveal at the end of the episode has us wanting more... and wondering why he STILL won't see his sons.
In our "Home" podcast, Sarah, Mia and I discuss what may be our favorite episode yet (rivaling "Skin"). First of all, it's really creepy. The cymbal monkey! The garbage disposal of evil! The episode also brings up some pressing questions for us, like who would buy their child a dancing monkey, anyway? And how does one sue a poltergeist?
Then we met Missouri, who puts Dean in his place before he even has a chance to make a snarky comment (we debate whether or not this is a good thing). We learned more about the Winchesters' troubling past. And what's going on with Sam? He's more perceptive than we realized...

Your discussions are so funny! Jackie being more afraid of doors than a freaky flaming poltergeist! ha, ha, ha
I like how Missouri treats Dean! Give me the spoon of doom! Oh, Dean calling his dad was so sweet!

I like your podcasts and find the commentary both interesting and amusing, though I don't agree with all.
This is actually the only ep that has Missouri, she's never been back. I would have liked to see her again, though I do agree that her berating Dean - though funny - is also out of line, especially considering how upset Dean was to be back in that house, and I was sorry that that plotline lasted no longer than the boys getting out of the car and into the house. Seeing and losing Mary again was definitely heartbreaking though.
As for John, I don't see him as harsly as Sarah does: In fact, I love John, though I do not think he was the best dad, obviously. I really believe he did the best he could, and he loved his sons. He desperately wanted to protect them from what happened to Mary, and by teaching them to defend themselves from the Supernatural, he has protected them, because he was right: the supernatural was not going to leave them live their lives in peace, it was always coming back. I wonder what everyone's feeling will be on John after "In My Time of Dying", my favourite episode. Mary's death left John obsessed, but I don't think he lost sight of his boys: Just his ability to communicate his care.

Thanks for the podcast.
I loved how we saw Dean crack a bit with the phone to John (Jensen did a fantastic job with that scene, it was so heartbreaking), and the cymbal monkey really creeeped me out, and I still can't watch the garbage disposal scene, but even with all that being said, I would've enjoyed Home more if I understand Missouri's motivations.
Fans have theories, but that's just the individual fan's interpretation. She just acted so differently towards each brother, that it was noticeable, but it was never explained. I think I have to agree with those who have said the show thought it would be funny and never really thought past that. I also have to agree with the others who say they gained more respect for Dean because, no matter how she treated him, he still treated her with respect.

I went on holiday to Spain the other week, and I downloaded all of your Supernatural podcasts to listen to around the pool to keep me entertained. I was laughing out loud! And i knew i have to comment on dis episode coz dis is one of my fav eps!it turned me into an ACKOHOLIC!!!!!da man's a legend!!

Well!but i wont put JW behind bars just yet!da man did da best he could,he had his reasons and plus all things considered da boys turned out okay!!!!
but,i gotta say MISSOURI's treatment to Dean was totally uncalled for & even if she was doin dat to help him.i mean,DEAN WINCHESTER is a pretty smart&strong man!he would have dealt with his emotions with dignity even without her hittin him in his head in front of another women!!
but all in all,it was a wholesome episode dat defined da show!!!
a fan from INDIA!!!*waves*

Loved the podcast. This is really a great episode. I never had any problem with the way Missouri treated Dean till recently, when I re-watched the episode. It's just that, as the storyline progressed and we learned just how insecure and troubled Dean is, the way she treated him just seemed so cruel, especially in comparison to the way she treated Sam, like he was some kind of angel. But, anyway, great episode and this was one of the best podcasts you guys have done about Supernatural. I'll be looking forward for next week's. :)

I do like Missouri, just sort of hates the way she treated Dean and fawned all over Sam.
=/
The scene were the boys see their mom...Webster's dictionary description for heartbreaking should include this moment. I got teary-eyed, and I'm not one to get emotional over moments like this. The only time I've ever cried while watching my Winchester boys was on the Season 2 finale when Dean...Oh well... You'll guys will see what I'm talking about.
Dean Winchester is no Chuck Bass! ROLF!
Oh, and I would totally have angry sex with Papa Winchester any day now...Let's talk about a kick-ass fictional genetic pool!

I have much to say about this episode, but I will address the Missouri treatment of Dean. Remember, according to John's journal (which was on the original WB page and had passages about the events right after the fire), Missouri met the boys a few days after the fire. So she knew that being in that house would freak Dean out big time. And yes, Dean was shown to be having issues about returning home. So, she distracted him by reading his thoughts and chastising him. This made it easier for Dean to be in that house because he was too worried about why this woman was treating him this way. Sam had no memory of that house at all - he was only 6 months old when he left. So he is able to handle being in the nursery, etc.
I do wonder why Dean doesn't remember Missouri, even a little bit. He was four years old when he met her and according to the journal, he talked non-stop to her for an afternoon while she held Sammy ;-)
Anyway, there was a reason she was doing that.

I remember being quite amused by Missouri's treatment of Dean...at first. I've actually known people who act like Missouri, but it all comes from a place of fondness for the person they are "scolding."
The problem was that, after a while, it started feeling like Missouri wasn't doing this out of some fondness for Dean. She actually seemed not to like him (while treating Sam like he'd hung the moon). So, after a while, her treatment of Dean stops being funny and starts coming off as just plain mean.
Dean, on the other hand, showed an extreme amount of patience under the circumstances, even going to help Missouri when she was having a hard time walking down some stairs. Most people I know wouldn't give a crap about helping someone who'd done nothing but insult them, but Dean didn't even need to think about going over and giving her a hand.
And this is the guy Missouri spent the entire episode putting down.

I think I agree with those that mentioned Missouri was there to make Dean the comic relief, as usual. But really, it came off just wrong. The guy was broken from having to go back to the house that shattered his life and sense of security, stole the mother and father he knew and loved and basically thrust him into a dark world with only John, who was a crappy father, to look up to. Missouri, for all her psychic powers, couldn't pick that up? WTH? She can tell the guy's wife is cheating on him and the wife is not there but she can't pick up on Dean's hurt and anger? I do think they tried too hard to make it seem like Dean was inconsequential to the story and it was basically an introduction to Sam's powers, Mary's secrets and John's secrets.

I'm on Vacation, on my father in law's computer so I really can't listen to the podcast, but I had to comment because this is my favourite episode I think, of season 1. It was well done, I loved Missouri... and got some insite on Sam. I like daddy Winchester okay, but I do have to say, I think he's not the greatest Dad out there, either!

I always thought Missouri came off as pretty insecure. Dean, freaked about being in the town where his mother was murdered, and afraid for his father, accidentally insults her abilities, and she goes off on him for the rest of the episode, tearing him down professionally and personally.
It was actually here that I gained a ton of respect for Dean and his patience, because despite all of her revolting behavior, he still helped her down the steps at the end, was respectful to her throughout, etc. I guess after dealing with John his whole life, he had a lot of practice with demanding, verbally abusive people! :P

I hated the way Missouri treated Dean. He did nothing to deserve that treatment while she fawned all over Sam. She really did suck as a psychic - if she was any good she'd know his issues and wouldn't go around calling him stupid and hitting him, even though she barely knows him.
She basically used them against him, as well as his respect for his dad which she figured would keep him from saying anything back to her.
"What's interesting about Missouri's treatment of Dean in this episode is that I think she does it to keep him from being too upset about being back home for the first time since the fire. If she keeps him on his toes, and keeps him focused on being irritated at her, he has less time to think about what it means to be back in the house where his mom died."
I don't think so. This episode was filmed just around the time of the Pilot airing so they hadn't really seen how people reacted to Dean yet. Just like with Sam mocking of Dean's EMF meter, I think the writers thought everyone would think it was just hysterical to see "cocky" Dean put in his place, but too many of us had already seen how much that cockyness was just a cover, and it just ended up coming across to alot of us as nasty. Dean of all people is someone who does NOT need to be knocked down a peg.
More than that, if that was her reasoning, it makes it no better. It makes her just like John, except you know without the blood relationship or even KNOWING Dean, "Sure Dean you're upset, but they we've got more important stuff to deal with first - you know EVERYONE and EVERYTHING else comes before you..."
More importantly Dean was doing just fine without her. Yes he was tense, but he WAS focused on the job at hand, he was actually more focused than Sam was. Dean's got a right to his feelings, he is ALLOWED to be upset, without her insulting his abilities(how does it make him, someone without psychic abilities, an amateur to use an EMF meter?) and calling him stupid and HITTING him in front of the woman who is essentially going to be expected to put her life and her kids lives in his hands. There is no excuse for that esp. when he is a stranger. She may have met him once when he was 5 but he doesn't remember her and it doesn't mean she knows him.

I love this episode and there is one thing you guys missed. It's the reference back to the opening scene of the first episode (the Take your brother outside as fast as you can line).
Also, we do have a pretty good idea why Mary said I'm sorry to Sam. Even though we don't have the details about it, we at least know the subject matter (the flashback in the second to last episode of Season 2 when Mary knew more than she should have).
*I don't want to say what happened in that episode so hopefully it doesn't spoil anything for those who haven't seen it.

adoro esse episódio!!!

I always took the "I'm sorry" from Mary to mean I'm sorry that I wasn't there for you growing up. Now you may be wondering "what about Dean", well he has really good memories of her and the things she taught him. Throughout the series Dean will randomly mention something that Mary taught him or how he wants to be a good son and make her proud. And Sam always gives Dean the questioning puppy look, like I didn't know that or how do you know that, and the answer is Dean was 4 1/2, when Mary died, so he remembers her. So it may have been she felt that she had affected Dean in a maternal way that she wasn't able to with Sam. Sam even says in the pilot that if it weren't for pictures he wouldn't even know what she looked like, let alone remember her.

lol jw but did you guys wonder why sam had the visions about his old home? because the visions were technically only supposed to be about the yellow eyed demon or the other psychic kids. and missouri said that it wasn't the thing that killed their mom but a poltergeist.
aaanyway, nice podcast, but i actually like daddy winchester. he's always trying to do the best he can even if sam and dean have different views. at this point, i think he knows that the demon is tied up with sam somehow and maybe he carries one of bobby's philosophies. 'we're not going to make a move until we know what the score is.' and in later episodes, john said after mary died, all he saw was evil. sooo sarah, (don't take this offensively) you haven't eased your opinion of john? because he did say that he never wanted that life for sam and he didn't want to tell the boys everything because it would just get them more involved. and he didn't want sam and dean hunting Azazel because he was one of the nastiest demons ever. john didn't want to have his boys killed and that was part of the reason he didn't want to tell them everything.
haha i'll save my real defense for daddy winchester stuff for the fighting words. is that going to come out after mia and jackie have seen the season finale of the first season where you basically get an entire grasp of john's character?
on another note, haha i loved this episode. and i thought the times where missouri was reading his mind and said 'boy, don't you cuss at me' was hecka funny! dean has always been my favorite of the brothers and i thought missouri knocking him down a peg was hilarious.

hi you three again
John didn't want to see his boys becuase he had had to know the truth about Sam first.
Eric said this at a convention I think.
but that was why.
I liked this ep alot.
and yes that scene when Dean is trying to call dad
omg
Jensen did awesome.
you really learn alot about Dean in taht one scene.
You see him become vunerable which is a first, but not the last.
omg that thing you said about Dean Winchester is no Chuck Bass
LMAO
