Supernatural Podcast: "Hook Man"

Listen Now

After watching the incredible "Skin" last week, we're a little disappointed by "Hook Man." The plot is questionable, and the damsel in distress fails to capture our attention (even though she does briefly capture Sam's!).

Hook Man

In our "Hook Man" podcast, Sarah, Mia and I wonder if we should start carrying around salt-filled shotguns. Also, could that girl have been batting her eyelashes at Sam any more quickly? Wait until your boyfriend's body gets cold, we say!

We discuss the not-that-scary hook man and the excessive exposition that weighed down the episode for us. There's also some talk about Sam's puppy dog eyes and their wondrous powers -- powers that thankfully so far have only been used for good.

Everyone starts talking about Jared's puppy dog look in this episode but I have to say the absolute ultimate is in the Rabbit foot episode. 'Bad Day at Black Rock' I think its called. It was the first time I truly appreciated the HD on my computer compared to my antique tv. pause and print

Certainly not a great episode but better than Wendigo. The hookman is not scary but not that as ridiclous as the Wendigo.
I can't wait until you do "Route 666". ; ) I know everyone hates Cassie and the evil Monstertruck but I love it! I'm curious why everyone hates it!!

Yeah, Hookman is definitely one of my least favorites of the series. Especially since it came right after Skin.

Hey guys, first off I want to say that I've really been enjoying your podcasts! Supernatural's the only CW show I watch, must confess, but I always look forward to your commentaries.

As far as Hook Man goes, especially after Skin, I think part of the reason this episode comes off as not so fabulous is because it was actually supposed to air third, not seventh, but it was bumped ahead because of directorial issues or something. (Then again, you get later episodes like Route 666 that still suck, but Hook Man just reminded me more of the awkwardness that was Wendigo.)

Looking forward to the next one!

haha i love your podcasts. they always make me laugh out loud. especially when you were talking about sam and his puppy dog eyes xD. lol awesome job and i have to agree that this wasn't a great episode nor is it a representative of supernatural as a whole.

about bugs, if you are going to do a podcast on that (wasn't really sure since you asked you skip it) see if you can touch on that scene where dean told sam that dad tried to visit him at stanford. that was a very touching scene.

i know route 666 wasn't a terrific episode itself, but you should just talk about that scene with naked dean. oh my gosh, that was so awesome. i swear that just took my breath away xD

Yay! You're back! Agreed, not the strongest ep, too MOtW. What's next? I loaned my DVDs to my boss, so I've lost track. Her first comment? "Hmmm, he's pretty". Hasn't even opened the box and already she's a DeanGirl :)

I too agree that this was not the best ep
but I as you guys were talking
I think this ep was gonna be the second ep of season 1 but obviously it isn't
I like hearing the reactions of people watching this the first time
it is fun to listen too
and I am a huge fan of this show
so listening to hear what you guys have to say is quite interesting and fun
thanks

the only good thing about next ep which is bugs
is we learn a bit more about John's aka dad's relationship to Sam
which is interesting
but I will say more about the next ep when you guys podcast it

"Hook Man" was the first episode of this show that did really disappoint me. And, now that you mention it, it is what I thought the entire show was going to be like before it started. (Thank goodness it isn't.) And I'm betting the episode was written before Kripke and Co. really realized how much more they had going with this show.

I agree on not loving Laurie. Before her, I'd mostly liked all the PIPs (even the ones in Wendigo). But Laurie just left me cold, and annoyed me beyond belief. However, when you mention how she got over things so quickly, maybe the fact that it turns out she was the one causing all of this bad stuff (even though she didn't realize it) can explain it. On some level, she had to have wanted this stuff to happen, which is probably why she didn't feel as bad about some of it as you might expect.

Oh, and the Hook Man is not one of my favorite SPN villains. But being visible wasn't what did him in. He was doing fine against Sam and Dean, even when they could see him. :D

And, now, on to "Bugs." Which isn't a great episode either, but is all kinds of fun anyway. :D

Hey guys!

I do agree w/ you on a lot of things. This wasn't the best episode ever, though I think the boys looks exceptionally pretty in it, so there's that, lol.

I don't know if this will make any difference in your opinion or not, but this episode was actually filmed right after Wendigo, and before Dead in the Water. They liked Dead in the Water so much that they pushed it forward on the airing schedule, so this one got placed a bit farther back, therefore making some of the exposition a bit clunky and weird, and not really meshing well w/ the other episodes around it. So while I do agree that it's not one of the better episodes thus far, I can forgive some things cause I know that it was written/filmed really early on, where the writers and actors were still trying to get a grip on who the characters were and trying to find their groove. So I try not to judge this one too harshly.

Sam's puppy eyes are amazing. I particularly love them when they get turned on Dean, cause Dean can never refuse Sam anything, lol.

Looking forward to next week's podcast!
