Supernatural Podcast: "Skin"

Listen Now

We've been Kripke'd! Mia and I had no idea what that meant until we watched "Skin," definitely the most revolting episode we've seen so far -- but also one of the best, since it revealed so much about the psychology of the brothers.

Evil Dean has Sam captive

In our "Skin" podcast, Sarah, Mia and I discuss the abuse that poor Sam has to endure this week, speculate about what shapeshifter-as-Dean's rants tell us about Dean's innermost thoughts, and wonder what's next for the Winchesters now that their quest has become more complicated.

No worries, JustMe -- you didn't spoil anything specific. And I agree, I LOVE how it all came back!

Oh crap. I posted over the weekend before I saw your note about spoilers Sarah. Sorry. :-(

Haha Skin was such a gross yet awesome episode! ;)

Another cute podcast guys.

Skin was the episode that took me from a casual viewer to an obsses...er...dedicated fan. It also made me a lifelong Jensen fangirl.

Skin is also one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. It was the first time the show really delved into the relationship with the boys and gave us a sense of what was going on beneath Dean's devil-may-care facade. It also set up the awesome FBI arc for later seasons. And man Jensen blew me away with just how creepy and "wrong" he made shapeshifter Dean. He really is so very talented and SPN and we are lucky to have him.

There really are so many great things about this episode. The brother moments. The things revealed about Dean's psyche. The awesome fight scene. Dean's outrage over the shifter driving his baby. I could go on listing things I loved all day.

And this show has had some great villains since "Skin," but the shitfter remains one of my top favorites. He was just an awesome character (thanks to Jensen). On the one hand, there was this sadness and pain in his eyes that made me feel for him. I could imagine how, before he learned to shift, his mutation must have deformed him and how people must have reacted to him because of it. So you do feel bad for him. Yet there was something else in his eyes that told you, even when he was being all calm and charming, that something was not right with this person and you want to stay far, far away. So you sympathised, but never lost sight of the fact that he was a twisted psycho.

Just awesome.

By the way, I'm loving these podcasts, and find myself looking forward to them every week. So, keep 'em comin'. :D

Hey, folks -- glad you like the podcasts! Just to make one thing clear -- I know what's going to happen later on (like with callbacks to Dean being dead and finding out about the amulet) but Jackie and Mia don't, and I'm trying to let them be as unspoiled as possible (like Mia and I are trying to be with OTH). It's just so fun to watch them discover things as the series goes on.

And I agree, the ickitude gets ramped up in S3, but by then I'd built up more of a tolerance. I hope Jackie and Mia do by then, too, or they're REALLY going to freak at Fresh Blood!

Another great podcast! I loved this episode, and I really enjoyed hearing you guys talk about it.

Great podcast, as usual!!

Skin is a really great episode. I'll be looking forward for the next podcast!

:)

I love this episode - and great podcast, btw.

This was a great one for really showcasing Jensen's versatile acting abilities ... and yes, revealing more into the psychological makeup .. plus great brother/brother stuff. (All things we get to see more of in later eps/scenes/seasons .. incl showcasing for Jared too .. don't want to give anything away).

I agree with Laurel that this is something that the show doesn't just "forget about" later on .. actually a couple things from the ep we see more about later on. Overall I think the writers/producers do a really good job of never forgetting what has happened in the past. (And Jared has mentioned during Q&A that he'll go back and look at a certain ep/scene on DVD to help prep for something that happens later - I won't mention what he referred to so that, again, I don't give anything away.)

Bondage ... oh yeah, Sam spends a LOT of time getting tied up (not that Dean "never" does ... but that definitely seems more tilted towards Sam). Aside from the *obvious* benefit(s) .. another, I think, is that the other actors don't need to be on apple boxes to be in the same frame as him!!!

Isn't it funny to think that because the guys spend so much time in layers, that even them getting down to a t-shirt becomes a "special moment"?

Skin is one of my favorite episodes from the first season. It revealed a bit about Sam's college experience and also about the brother's complex relationship in general. But most interesting to me was the insight we get about Dean's feelings about his "role" in the Winchester family dynamic and how it affects him still.

Jensen's performance was outstanding in this episode. Not only as Dean, but he created a completely unique character in Shapeshifter Dean and did a great job with both roles.

This episode really has everything: a great plot, fascinating monster of the week, great brotherly scenes, and also some great music! Nice job on the podcast, ladies!

the amulet was given to dean by sam i think it was a christmas present

Skin was the episode that finally made me admit this show was more than a guilty pleasure. Not to mention the music was used brilliantly - "In A Gadda Da Vita" and "Hey Man Nice Shot" in particular.

It was also the first episode where I consciously realized Jensen was getting into a real habit of making me go "This guy is so good" in almost every single episode. His shapeshifter was so cold and creepy without being at all "hammy" or scenery chewing. There was just something so "off" about him, he definitely was not Dean(in fact that is what he's been called, Not!Dean:). I was also impressed that the show didn't take the usual cliche route of having Sam need to decide which was the "real Dean" to kill and instead had Dean kill "himself" just because there is something so messed up about that and so fitting in with Dean's issues and journey.

It was also fascinating that this freak of nature seemed to identify so strongly with Dean. If that didn't start giving people a hint of just how damaged Dean is, I don't know what would. :)

I loved Skin. Jensen was so great as both Dean (as always), but also as ShapeshifterDean. The scene in the tunnel, with Dean ripping his skin off was great!

awesome podcast
I too love this ep.
can't wait for the next one.

Sam bondage... *sigh*
haha... actually, at some Supernatural convention in Chicago there was something and the crowd said "can you re-enct huow you were when you were posessed with a demon?" and jared said "I don't know... i'd have to be in that scene. you'd have to tie me up and-" but at that point the crowd started cheereing so loud he was interrupted.

sorry, randomness, but your bondage line reminded me of that.

This is one of my favorite episodes because it has such a cool plotline, and you see a differnet side to the brother's relationship. plus, two hot brothers fighint with eachother? is that really so bad? ;)

great podcast. i hope you're back with more soon.

Skin was a fantastic episode and Jensen's acting really shone through. He made the Shapeshifter both evil, and yet sympathetic when it was talking to Becki, just before the tried to kill her. LOL. What a great episode and great acting. One of my favorites because it was also the beginning of the show showing tension between the brothers. Not all was kosher and Dean does have issues.

I love this episode, though I agree that it's a bit more gory than I like. Though just be warned, if you ever make it to season 3, they amp up the gore by about 10 times!

I think both Jared and Jensen have cited this one as one of their favorites, mostly for the brother-brother fighting. It really is a great episode to start getting into their heads and really understanding how they feel about each other and their lives.

I love how you guys made the comment about "being ok is relative", cause it's very true on this show. As much as these boys get thrown around all the time by the different nasties each week, their REAL injuries are purely psychological. The fact that they're so dependent on each other just makes it that much worse for them, cause they're constantly hurting each other and not even realizing it. I'd love to hear what an actual psychologist has to say about these boys and their issues, lol.

And the thing about Dean being technically dead DOES come back. I don't wanna give anything away, but I think it's mentioned kinda in passing later on this season, but then it comes back in a much bigger way in season 2 and then continuing on. I'm glad they didn't just drop that whole thing and pretend it wasn't there, cause it would've made it less believable (well, even moreso than a show about demon hunting brothers, lol).

Thanks for another great podcast!

Kripke said in an interview that he was surfing the board after Skin and saw one girl posted "OMG Deans taking off his shirt", her next post was "OMG Deans taking off his skin, ewwwwww gross". Kripke seemed to get a kick out of that.

One of the first really great episodes. And the first episode where the opening music knocks you off your feet!!!

haha, did I actually say i like to hear the fear in your voice? That was mean... although kinda true... it's nice to know that Supernatural is scary... I don't get scared easily.

This was a really good episode, and I really liked the brother fight scenes. They did a really good job and it was quite entertaining!

I am with you on the Sam bondage thing, Sarah! I love Sam but him being tied up doesn't bother me in the least! *evil laughter*
