Supernatural: Corrupting Angels

What we loved
Castiel
Every moment with Castiel was gold. There's his personal space problem ("My apologies"), his bad-assery in the face of Raphael ("Today you're my little bitch."), his inability to lie ("No, it'll be much worse for you"), and, most deliciously, his complete and utter terror in the bordello. Hee!
Lucifer
We admit it -- we're a bit dim sometimes. Even though we saw Lucifer use a dead loved one to seduce his first vessel, we were still shocked when Jess turned out to be the Archfiend himself. He's crafty! And once again, he was sympathetic, sincere, and utterly implacable. "I will never lie to you. I will never trick you. But you will say yes to me." We completely buy it.
There's more after the break -- read on!
Sam's resolve
You gotta admit, that boy's willpower is something to behold. Demon blood was literally forced into his mouth, but he still didn't give in to it. Wow.
Dean's priorities
So, you're summoning an archangel who will most likely smite the hell out of you. What's on your to-do list? For Dean, it's getting Cas laid. Hee!
What we're torn on
Dean's freedom
Dean casts a few longing looks at the empty passenger seat in the car, but he decides that it's really much better for him to be Sam free. The Bros Forever! side of us was appalled, but another part of our twisted Supernatural psyche could see his point. We really haven't seen him belly laugh... possibly ever. Now that he has a legitimate excuse to cut Sam loose for a while, he's taking advantage of it. We can't blame him for that... but we can't help but think (hope?) there's a whole lot of denial going on.
Sam's struggles
Poor, poor Sam. He's just trying to get his head back together, you know> He feels like he deserves to take a break, that it's better for everyone involved if he's not in the mix now. And we sympathize, we really do. But it is the apocalypse, so there's a part of us that thinks he's going to have to wait to be broken until after the rain of fire, etc. It sucks, but there it is.
Angelic rationalizations
We get it, watching the events of the 20th century unfold couldn't have been a picnic, but that's no reason to bring on the end times! But that's basically what Raphael says: "We're tired. We just want it to be over. We just want paradise." We often feel that way about big tasks -- at some point in every move to a new house, one of us suggests we just rent a flamethrower, torch everything we own, and start over rather than pack another damn box. But hello -- entire planet of people who will be killed! Take some No-Doz, drink some coffee and suck it up!
Sam and Dean: Angel Condoms
OK, so Dean is Michael's perfect vessel, and Sam is Lucifer's preferred body? What kind of messed-up genetics, not to mention bad luck, makes you the ideal meat suit for heavenly visitors? We know they're uncommonly handsome, and seeing one of them appear before us bathed in white light would make us give thanks to God, but are they really the only two people on earth that will do?
Favorite quotes:
It was a great week for fabulous lines. Here are some of our favorites:
- "You were wasted by a teenage mutant ninja angel?" -- Dean, on learning that Raphael was the archangel who smote him.
- "Last time you zapped me someplace I didn't poop for a week. We're driving." - Dean, on choosing the Metallicar over angelic intervention
- "I'm a riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a taco." -- Sam, on his mysterious past
- "Let me see if I can think of the best hunter who might be in the immediate vicinity. Oh, that'd be you." Bobby, to Sam.
- "last night on earth - what are your plans?" "I just thought I'd sit here quietly." -- Dean and Castiel.
- There are two things I know for certain. One: Bert and Ernie are gay. Two, you are not going to die a virgin. Not on my watch." -- Dean, to Castiel.
- "This is a den of iniquity. I should not be here." "Dude, you full on rebelled against heaven. Iniquity is one of the perks!" -- Castiel and Dean

This was a great episode! The scenes between Dean and Cass were so funny! I laughed so hard with this episode!
But it was sad to see the boys apart. I can't wait to see them back on the road together.

I wonder if, when fending off the hunters trying to force demon blood down his throat, Sam was wishing he had Dean helping him? I must say, I was SO proud of Sam, not just fighting off those a-hole hunters, but holding that demon blood in his mouth and spitting it in their faces. He did not swallow it, which speaks volumes for his self-control! He even told Jess he felt he COULD change--before she turned into Lucifer and turned his world upside-down. I really must give Sam kudos for his foray into "normal" so far. He really has done an excellent job of proving himself able to overcome his demon blood addiction. Love, Robin

Is there an option for hating everything Castiel did? Because that's what I would choose. That was the most ridiculous, worthless subplot this show has ever done, not to mention insulting to the very idea of angels. And that's saying a lot, considering the angels last season. If Sam's part of the episode hadn't been well done, this probably would have qualified for my least favorite Supernatural episode ever.

Another episode that just didn't live up to my expectations.
First of all Sam moping around a bar, throwing himself a pity party was just boring, repetetive, and failed to show any real self examination on his part. Sam still thinks that his only offence is starting the apocalypse. The truth is that the seal breaking is the end result in a long line of other things that Sam needs to take accountability for. A years worth of bad choices, lies, betrayals, depravity, callousness, inability to listen to others etc. Not to mention a lifetime of flaws that went unchecked (Pride, self absorbtion, sense of superiority etc). And yet, Sam has still not mentioned any of this. No mention of killing the nurse, no mention of betraying his brother on every level possible, nothing about screwing a demon and disrespecting some poor girl's dead body in the process. ETC! ETC! ETC! Until he acknowledges everything he is only hindering himself from moving forward. It does the character and the viewers a disservice if it's all swept under the rug like it never happend.
Lindsey was a poorly acted, annoying a intrusive. I hope this will be the last we see of her.
Sam as Lucifer's vessle? We all predicted that one months ago. LAME!
Bobby sent hunters Sam's way. What was he thinking? I think I need a break from Bobby for awhile.
The whorehouse scene was funny but, I was glad that Cas's virginity remained in tact. I hate peer pressure in every form and Dean was laying it on a bit thick here. One of the reasons that I love the character of Dean so much is because he has strong convictions and the strength to stand by them. Well Cas has convictions as well and they need to be respected. I wanted to smack Dean in between my fits of laughter.
Other than that I loved everything about Dean in this one. The bad assery, the oneliners ("eat it Twilight," hee), to his conflicting emotions and admission about being chained to his family for so long. For all of Sam's grousing of wanting to be "free" from his family, it's Dean who has needs to be liberated! He has been taking care of them since he was a traumitized four year old. After a lifetime of having his thoughts, feelings and sometimes his personal safety treated like they were expendable, it's time for Dean to say enough. I'm still not completely convinced that he has though (those conflicting emotions I mentioned). I guess time will tell.
At the end of the day I want the brothers reunited too. But I want it done in a realistic fashion.

I think Raphael could be justified in what he is doing or not doing (letting demons overrun everything). God is gone and left control with the angels. Unless there is a mandate given by God to the angel, they can come up with reasons for destroying humanity. They are higher beings than humans and maybe they just want to be left alone. We don't know how they think or what ends they want, so I think we should see how this season plays out before casting judgment. Full review of the episode.
