Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.) was among those who were told to stay in their Capitol Hill office Friday after reports that shots were fired in the Rayburn House Office Building.

DeLauro and Rep. Nancy L. Johnson (R-Conn.) have offices in the sprawling building. Johnson was not in the office; she took an early morning flight back to Connecticut.

Police sealed off the Rayburn building late Friday morning after receiving a report about what Capitol police called "the sound of gunfire" in the garage level. Four ambulances were summoned, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

The rest of the Capitol complex remained open, and the U. S. Senate, which was in session, continued to conduct business as usual. The House was not in session.

DeLauro was in her second floor office when the lockdown began. "No one in the office heard any of these alleged shots," said press secretary Kate Cyrul. "We are in the office with the door closed and locked and are glued to CNN like everyone else."

At Johnson's office, spokesman Brian Schubert said "We are safe," and also awaiting further instructions from Capitol police

Just a perfect send off for the Memorial Day week-long vacation by Congress and typical of the crises developed by a failing regime who rules on fear. How much did this lockdown cost?
