Like several other government buildings along Constitution Avenue, the Justice Department's main headquarters building, between Ninth and 10th streets, is closed today due to flooding from monsoon-like rains which have inundated the Washington area over the last three days.
Water pouring into the sub-basement beneath the underground parking area knocked out phones and e-mail, forcing the agency's essential personnel into temporary quarters a few blocks away. No word yet on when the circuits will dry out and the building will re-open.
Surprisingly, and happily for top Justice officials, Murphy's Law did not kick in.
They had been expecting a blockbuster Supreme Court ruling in the Hamdan case, which would determine the legality of military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, and set a horde of reporters to dialing and e-mailing DOJ for comment.
But Hamdan wasn't in the batch of decisions released today. The next day the ruling could come is Wednesday, when the forecast calls for more rain.
