(Dr. Paul does the Des Moines radio rounds on Thursday morning.)

by Jason George [updated Friday, 1 p.m. with campaign clarification]

DES MOINES – Rep. Ron Paul is hoping for victory at the Iowa caucuses next Thursday night, but admits it's hard to know if his election-night support will be stronger than his single-digit poll numbers.

"The one thing that we can't measure as well as the ordinary polls is will our people be motivated? They seem to be motivated, but will they know where to go and what to do? That's the big question," Paul said in a Tribune interview, in between a day of Iowa events.

"We're doing well and we're improving. Maybe if we had another month – who knows where we would be?"

Paul said he has marveled at the funds he's raised this quarter – about $19 million – and his campaign is doing everything they can to turn that money into momentum on caucus night, Jan. 3.

"We're having a lot of young people out here right now rounding up the troops and teaching about where to go and what to do."
"We have to do our best by the day of the caucus."

If he doesn't do well in the early primaries, Paul said he would re-evaluate his Republican bid and the possibility of a third-party run depending on how he does in the contests on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

"With my staff I've never discussed it, but I sort of have that in my mind."

Jesse Benton, Paul's national spokesman, told the Tribune on Friday that Paul had misheard that final question.

"He got confused – the fault is with him," Benton said.

"Ron has no plans or intentions to run as a third-party candidate."

I call BS on Ron Paul saying that he'll be re-evaluating a third party run.

He's consistently held that he has no intention of doing so. He already has so much support for the Republican nomination, why would he even have to consider a third party run?

He's won more straw polls than any other Republican candidate, he's raised more money this quarter than any other candidate, he has the most donors of any candidate. He's pulling 10% (a statistical tie with John McCain and Giuliani) in Iowa.

The only way Ron Paul would be on the Libertarian ticket next year would be because he is also on the Republican ticket and the Constitution Party ticket.

I doubt he said that he has a 3rd party on his mind, I think you misquoted him. He said that if he doesn't do well on February 5th he'll reevaluate his bid.

EXACTLY my #1 concern. When it comes time to actually act...to get off the computer and go VOTE. Have you checked with your local Board of Elections to see if you are indeed registered. Do you know where to go? Are you willing to do what's necessary if you need to "make time" in your day. Will "we", as Ron Paul supporters follow through? Until I see the Iowa results...I'm a bit apprehensive. All the informal online voting, blogs, and message boards in the www won't get Ron Paul elected. Do what's necessary to save our country.

Where will you be when the rLOVEution takes office?

Ron Paul will go the distance. People are disgusted with politics as usual and want someone with honesty, integrity, and authenticity. For a great satire on the president, the mainstream media, and the war on terror, see this YouTube music video from the international award-winning zombie musical feature film, "Song of the Dead." It' stars horror movie veteran Reggie Bannister (Phantasm, Wishmaster, Bubba Ho-tep) as the president of the U.S. The filmmaker, Chip Gubera, is giving a share of his profits from DVD sales to the Ron Paul campaign. Go to:

Go, Ron, Go! The people have so much enthusiasm for you and your message, we will figure out what needs to be done for you and do it! Thank you!

Let's see... are the Ron Paul supporters, who are giving more money, volunteering more time, posting more comments, waving more signs, writing more letters, making more calls, and knocking on more doors going to be more, or less, likely to vote in the primaries? I'm going with "What is more likely?", Alex.

Some years ago while running against a Republican Congressman, and friend, I told him that if he ever wanted to know how I would vote on an issue, just see how Ron Paul is voting. I am a Viet Nam Vet, a Libertarian, and a firm supporter of Ron Paul for his philosophy of true freedom; freedom from a coercive and oppressive government.

Ron Paul is the only candidate out of the entire field, Republican or Democratic, that has addressed the need to get back control of our currency from the Federal(not federal at all)
Reserve(which does not reserve anything) who is owned by the international bankers.

Ron Paul could be our last chance, he is not part of the club.

I hope he runs as an independant, I really hate republicans! I believe he could catch on fire as an Independant.

I sincerely hope you have not misquoted Dr Paul

Ron Paul is going to win as a republican. A third party bid will be necessary.

Ron Paul is going to win as a republican. A third party bid will not be necessary.

Not in over two hundred years has America had a Statesman the likes of Dr. Ron Paul (and that goes further back than "Honest Abe"). Dr. Paul's candidacy has given hope and light to millions.

Alone amongst a gaggle of half-wits, no wits, chicken-hawks and shills for corporate special interests, the people will support this true Patriot.

Why do they call them "parties" anyway? They do not make me feel festive at all.

The Republicrats, the corporate media, the central bankers, the war industry cartel, and other special interests are patently UNAMERICAN. This is what I and my family have observed these past 8 to 9 months.

Ron Paul really is the only "Hope for America".

Ron Paul Rocks !!!

I Vote For Virtue; I Vote For Ron Paul !!!

Time to play hard ball for Dr. Paul. He needs to say publicly that he will get the third party votes which could be important in a close race. Then if the Republicans do not get it and pick him they can bet 100% that they will lose if he runs against them on a third part ticket and they will deserve it. But sadly if Ron is not the President America will lose.

Ron Paul running as a conservative 3rd party candidate?

Excellent scenario!

The mortgage market is infecting our entire 'debt' economy, which will most likely experience spectacular collapse in 2008.

I pray Ron Paul wins at the primaries, for the sake of my children and grandchildren.

Thanks Jason George for an even-handed article!

I'm politically naive -- I don't understand why the media is so interested in having a candidate unequivically state whether they will run as a third-party candidate or accept a vice-presidential nomination. There always seems to be wrangling on this point, and I don't understand why it matters, although a candidate's ability to not answer seems to be some sort of acid test. I'll vote for him in the Republican primary, and if he runs as an independent, I'll vote for him again.

So far so good. Lots of positive response. However I am sure the anti Ron Paul people will be here soon. It seems to me that the majority of comments that I read that against Ron Paul seem to come from two directions.

First, the Socialist/Democrat position. I understand this fairly well. The belief is that it's not fair for a few greedy people to hord the wealth to the detriment of the masses. They seem to believe that the government is the answer and that it should be given the power to redistribute the wealth.

Second, the Neocon/fascist position. These people seem to either believe that we are under dire threat from Terror and need to police the world to keep us safe. Of course there are others who believe that we should just go and bomb the h#ll out of everyone and "redistribute their wealth" Of course the scariest of the neocons are the supporters of Hagee such as Huckabee, and McCain.

As for the Socialist/Democrat position I used to agree with them to some extent. However, I now believe that the only way our nation will remain free and prosperous is with free market principles, limited government, and with fiscal and personal responsibility.

In regards to the Neocon/Fascist position. I do understand that some people have been scared into this position. Most of this group that I have met seem to be decent, honest people. They are afraid and mabey they have a right to be. However, I truly believe that our foreign policy is disastorous and will eventually lead to more attacks here as well as lead to the deaths of more and more victims overseas. As for the ones who believe (they rarely say it out loud) that we should steel the wealth of other nation for our own benefit, what can I say. There have always been people like this about. They are the ones using the fear factor on the first group. What can I say about the Hagee supporters? When I say that they are the scariest of the bunch I mean it. Anyone who can believe that we should bomb Iran for Isreal (the chosen people) to give a kickstart to the rapture is dangerous. I'm glad they are not in the majority I think we would be in big trouble if they were. This is definatly one issue that people need to wake up about. This is a very large movement and is growing larger. As I stated earlier Hackabee and McCain are supporters they have spoken at his rallies (to the waving of Israely flags and chears for the bombing of Iran). I make this point to show just how important it is that Ron Paul wins this election.

Well thanks for letting me rant. I hope that's OK.
Ron Paul President 2008!

With Pakistan and Iraq, Dr. No has become Dr. I told You So. Lets hope he wins so the rest of us don't also become Dr.'s WE Told You So.

'.....then you call the wife and have her perform the Air Traffic Controller function as you approach O'hare air space.'

Absent context, I kinda have to guess at what this means, but it sounds like you're implying you think that the only way the ATC system can work is if the Federal government does it.

Ridiculous.

Nothing in the world says State governments can do it; nothing says it can't be done by private corporations. The current ATC system is decades old and originated in an era when only the Feds could afford the communications and computers the system needs. That's no longer true. My guess is that a privately run ATC system would actually be more efficient than the current one.

Go Ron Paul!!!!!!!!!
Harpers Magazine wrote a telling article about our country that sheds light on what Ron Paul is trying to save us from.....

Thanks Baltimore Sun for allowing me to post - (I know live in CA but grew up in Bmore :)

Ron Paul is the only candidate I will vote for in the 2008 Presidential election. The only REAL candidate. get registered as a Republican as soon as possible so you can cast a vote for freedom!

Vote Ron Paul 08

I'm thinking Dr.Paul may not have actually said he would consider a 3rd party run. That's pretty counter to all that I've seen him say on this issue.
And, personally, I don't think he'll need to run on a 3rd party ticket.
We've got his back....
Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, Constitutionalists, and whoever else I'm missing.
He is the one we are voting for.

God Bless Dr. Paul!!

He said he will stay in it until they are mathematically eliminated.

I seriously doubt he said he was considering a 3rd party bid and hadn't discussed it with his staff then leaked it to this blog! He said that to you despite saying the opposite 100 times in the last month? You discredit yourself. RPFTW08

Rudy Giuliani is the most viable candidate:

http://rudygiulianiforum.com/

C.Morris, too funny! (lol) I don't think I'd be chuckling if he wasn't the sanest man in the race. (God, I love this man) Go Ron Paul!!

BS - we just watched him on National TV and he didn't say any of that. He said no matter what happens in Iowa - he will campaign hard. Also, he isn't even thinking about a 3rd party run. Media has to stop putting words in his mouth.

We have to make this happen. If we don't the USA might fall into secession. Read this article...

http://www.chessmaniac.com/2007/12/ron-paul-plays-chess-with-neocons.php

In a hundred interviews I've seen of Ron Paul, he has always said that he has "no intentions" of running for a third party candidate. It's very likely that this author misquoted Paul.

hey jason, i think this was a good article

i think the doctor is thinking correctly, it is appropriate to question the amount of support that will translate into votes, influential votes.

only time will tell, roughly 5 days left until some 'official'esque polls which will be absolutely unignorable by mainstream media

i think that's when the ron paul revolution will hit full stride. his message is logic and although i dont agree with all his writings, i understand his basis and his basis is the constitution. with a very restrictive basis, you can't go wrong. hey a government with less power! good! that means it can screw up LESS! :)

ron paul is the only candidate who i believe will actually logically reduce the size of the government and increase the standard of living for ALL americans, and indirectly reverse the impact that the western world has had on the entire world since ww1. there is a lot of history to be read, i would sadly say much more than what the average american will willfully read AND comprehend it's effects.

I'm going to come out and say with confidence that any cnn/faux news polls that show Paul in the single digits are completely fabricated. Look at GOPStrawPolls.com. Paul was in the lead by a landslide. So what do they do? Take him off the ballot! Can't win if you can't vote for him. The neoconservative Republican base is scared shitless. Of course, they'll have a tough time rigging a caucus(of course they've pulled off an election, so you never know!)

Dr. Paul will prevail and it will prove that telephone polls are obsolete. A pollster called me and said it would take 20 minutes. I hung up - I work 2 jobs and I need my chill out time.

THE DOCTOR HAS WON EVERY DEBATE WHEN THE VOTING WAS ONLINE AND OPEN TO EVERYONE - INCLUDING THE CNN DEBATE POLL.

And The Doctor is leading all Republicans in fundraising - all of it small donations from ordinary people.

Thats the real indicator of where the public sentiment is.

The Doctor "will abolish the IRS and replace it with nothing."

And he will save a trillion dollars anually by bringing the troops home from all foreign bases. Lets keep America's money at home where it can help people .

Lets vote Ron Paul and save America. Team America-World Peace is bankrupting the nation.

Ron Paul has surged to 3.8% in the national Republican polls, that's 8 tenths of a point above the +/- error calculation.

Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich and his wife in o8!

When the Ames Iowa Caucus took place, they projected Ron Paul in last place with 1-2% of the vote (approximately 150 votes). The story was ignored that he instead came in with 9.1% of the vote, registering at 1,305 voters.

Ahead of Paul were of course, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. But of note: Sam Brownback placed third. Tom Tancredo placed fourth. Ron Paul came in fifth. Tommy Thompson placed sixth.

The nearest from there is Fred Thompson with 1.4% (204 votes) and then Rudy with 1.3% (183 votes). McCain took 0.7% with just over 100 votes.

Read the above OpEd link "why RP will win in Iowa"
6-10 voters per precinct would guarantee a Ron Paul victory in Iowa. Doesnt seem like a lot but times 2114 precincts, that is 12- 20,000 voters for Ron Paul.
GO IOWA !!! 2,966,334 voting age Iowans in 2005. About 1 of every 150 people need to "VOTE" Ron Paul. This is how a vote counts.

Why do they call them "parties" anyway? They do not make me feel festive at all.

My thoughts exactly!

What to do after Ron Paul??

If Ron Paul gets into the White House, even if that happens--and the odds are 6 to 1 according to the professional bookies--we still have work ahead of us. That work will consist of getting other limited government Jeffersonian libertarian minded way travelers into all of the offices that we can, from dog catchers to the Supreme Court. Democrat,Republican, Libertarian, these are merely titles, what is paramount is that we--those of us that are on fire for, thirst after what Dr. Paul offers--get as many ALLIES into offices to assist ourselves with Freeing ourselves from the near on dictatorship that we labor under at this time.

Think about it for a minute now. If even 1/10th of the effort that we all put into this primary to get Ron Paul into the limelight of the GOP where to be keep alive and reused to get say 500 city councilmen, or county commissioners or what not at the local level, then we would have a true real and solidly based revolution of ideas that could not be stopped.

I am not poo pooing Dr. Paul at all, on the contrary I believe that his chances are fantastic at this time; however if he loses or once he is gone--8 years tops--we need a back up plan to ensure that the gains that we have made are not ephemeral. I believe that the MySpace and MeetUp Groups that have formed around the ideas that this mild mannered man can be the kernel that will sprout into the solidity that we will need to ensure that Freedom is more that just a word.

I am not really the guy for this. I am a two time loser convict, and not the most eloquent person; however some of you MAY just be the ones that can bring this to fruitation for the betterment of us all. I urge you to think about my idea, of using the energy that has been built up here to build a political foundation that can not only put Ron Paul into the Presidency of the United States of America, but that can put you into what ever local, or state offices that you can do the most good from for the advancement of the ideal.

Thank You for your time.

I have never voted Republican. But I like what I hear from Paul and now he would get my vote. If he runs on third party ticket he most certainly get my vote.

John McCain has shown his colors. Why would anyone vote for him.

Mike Huckabee has no experience whatsoever except for messing up his own state. Who would vote for someone with his record?

Mitt Romney has nice hair. Now there's a reason to vote for him. :-)

Rudy Guliani is hoping his grandstanding after 9/11 will sweep him into the White House.

Only Ron Paul has the record. Nobody, AND I MEAN NOBODY else actively running for President has ANY true, consitent, patriotic record to run on. Sorry John, being a POW isn't a reason to vote for you - but I wish you happiness and good luck elsewhere in life.

Supporters, get outside and recruit (gently) and vote.

Nobody knows what will happen on caucus day, and this is no time to be complacent. We should keep in mind that no candidate has followers with the depth of commitment shown Ron Paul. The only candidate who comes close (and not very) is Obama. Paul's supporters are more likely to turn out, and less likely to back down if anyone tries to pressure them into changing their votes.

Good luck in Iowa, Ron! I'll be voting for you in Maryland when the time comes!

I consider myself as independent and I’ve been more inclined to vote for Obama, but if Ron Paul got the nomination, without doubt I will defiantly vote for Paul 100%!

Come on, Iowans! We're counting on you. Everything is ready, but you're the match that will set this grassfire burning. Please, give it everything you've got.

Ron Paul is "top tier"...

http://truthalert.net/Republican%20Presidential%20Candidate%20Rankings.htm

...and his chances are good.

RON PAUL FOR FREEDOM, PROSPERITY AND PEACE!

Ron Paul, ya'll.
I will be voting in the CA primary for sure!
I am going to try to find a meet up group where I live and get active. I have donated several times and will again on Dec. 31st.

Go the distance and then go third party if not nominated for the GOP party.
Last chance for freedom is what this election is about.
Ron Paul For President.

Jumping parties to fool the masses. Not too honest IMO. If he's a Libertarian he should stand on that.

Who care??? You fucking morons don't leave the house cept to go to the mall and get a movie and video game?!? WTF do you even fucking care what the guy does? Put the fucking gun to your, already dead brain and blow your fucking brains out. The American Dolt deserves to be raped-repeatedly and will be raped-repeatedly, by those who control you. You ARE controlled. Bunch of fucking talking monkeys. Get ready for the grandaddy assfuck of all time-you earned it. Fucking dolts.

apparently very few RP supporters have land lines or are registered GOP voters at least that is what im told is the reason for his low poll numbers? The other voters don't have cell phones? Doesnt the fact that they took time to get registered mean they will vote? I was at the Iowa straw polls and RP folks were all over the place with signs and making alot of noise but when the rubber met the road he didnt even make a blip on the radar. Polls do count and when your numbers are high in the polls you really do get more votes. My prediction Huckabee will win Iowa, Romney will win NH, Huckabee will win South Carolina.

Dr. Ron Paul is probably correct on foreign policy.

Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit, believes that Dr. Paul's foreign is the only one that makes sense in this dangerous world. Those who disagree like faux news, Bill O Reallydumb or other "journalists" disagree, then perhaps they know more about geopolitics and terrorism than the former head of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit does.

From the Parade Magazine interview with Bhutto "What would you like to tell President Bush?" I ask this riddle of a woman.
She would tell him, she replies, that propping up Musharraf’s government, which is infested with radical Islamists, is only hastening disaster. “I would say, ‘Your policy of supporting dictatorship is breaking up my country.’ I now think al-Qaeda can be marching on Islamabad in two to four years.”

Paul doesnt have much of a chance at winning all those 'liberal' gop voters does he?
Like Pat Buchanan did several years ago? He,(paul) can lose, and walk off with what ever money he does not spend in losing.
Buchanan got 5 million as I recall?
And so I ask you when was the last Paul TV ad you ever saw?

I support Ron Paul, and I want to congratulate him for his honesty & decency. He is my president right now!

I've see some interviews (recently Glenn Beck) and it has been amazing how he is being attacked as being somehow unpatriotic because he is against the concept of the U.S. being the 'world's policeman.' Ron Paul is right, and he is a threat to all those who think of America as being a rich bully - instead of a caring friend who has principles.

Go Ron, go!

Here's some more of DOCTOR Paul's revolutionary thinking:

"Indeed, it is shocking to consider the uniformity of opinion among blacks in this country. Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5% of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty, and the end of welfare and affirmative action…. Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the “criminal justice system,” I think we can safely assume that 95% of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.

If similar in-depth studies were conducted in other major cities, who doubts that similar results would be produced? We are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, but it is hardly irrational. Black men commit murders, rapes, robberies, muggings, and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers."

Please, people... try to look a little more carefully at him BEFORE casting your vote.

Thanks

Spread the news to other networks and media sources, Foxnews is excluding Ron Paul from the upcoming New Hampshire debates scheduled for January 6th, just 2 days before the New Hampshire Primaries. Why they are not inviting him, we really do not know, but it is wrong, and very bias.
This information is on Ron Paul's website at:

http://RonPaul2008.com

Its time to boycott Foxnews and their sponsors.

Please don't let this happen America.

I'm Voting for Ron either way. I sent him $100 to win, and that's what I want. My son is in Iraq and I him home, and Dr. Paul is the only guy that is actually giving me honest answers. You either love him or hate him, but you'll vote for him because he's not lying.

ON THE ABOVE "RACIST" COMMENT: This is the same tired crap being copied and pasted on every blog and article written on Ron Paul. The quote is from some newletter that some idiot typed up without Ron Paul's approval and then circulated. It was on the news. It's been discredited, so don't fall for this kind of garbage. Just thought I'd let everyone know in case you are thinking of buying into their lies.

Randy,

Please provide proof that Dr. Paul made the comments you accuse him of making.

If you cannot provide proof I recommend you stop posting slander on the internet.
