More evidence today for why many an actor should stick to memorizing his lines and leave political chatter to the professionals.

Sean Penn, at a Cannes Film Festival press conference, had some words to the wise for Sen. Barack Obama. Too bad they weren't coherent. This is from the British newspaper, the Telegraph:

At a press conference beforehand, the actor, an outspoken critic of the Bush administration, offered his views on the Democratic nomination race.

Asked if he would be joining other Hollywood A-listers in pledging support for Obama, Penn gave him a less than ringing endorsement and warned that he has an awful lot to live up to.

"I don't have a candidate I'm supporting and I'm certainly interested and excited by the hope that Barack Obama is inspiring," he said, but went on to accuse him of a "phenomenally inhuman and unconstitutional" voting record.

"I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the degree of disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be," Penn said. "This is the most important election, certainly in my lifetime, and maybe ever."

"Phenomenally inhuman" and "unconstitutional?" Disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be?" What the heck is he talking about?

Sean flies in on his rorer 714!

Penn's endosement is weird. On the other hand, I was really glad that Barack Obama was endorsed by Tom Hanks, because he starred in my absolute favorite movie of all time, The Polar Express. I think that he also produced it.

In the movie, Tom Hanks plays the conductor on the train that goes to the North Pole and he punches the tickets really fast with words like "HOPE" and "CHANGE" and... best of all... "BELIEVE."

The little boy who gets on the train and isn't really sure that he believes in Santa Claus, but then he is selected to receive the first-gift-of-Christmas and he gets this sleigh bell that you can only hear if you really believe in Santa. So, of course, none of the adults can hear it.

That bell is like the perfect symbol for Barack Obama. None of the young people can understand why all the old people can't hear the bell. It's because they don't BELIEVE because they are TOO OLD!

Tom Hanks also starred in Forrest Gump, so I know that he can identify with poor white people who are not too educated. Forrest is barely one step above retarded and even though he has no education, he turns out to be one of the most successful people in America. I realize that sounds more like a Republican story than a Democrat one, but even so, Hanks didn't endorse John McCain. He endorsed Barack Obama

Sean Penn is an admirable American and I only hope that he is voicing a hope that Senator Obama will rise to meet the challenges that face the next President of the United States. I am certain he will and make all Americans proud, to have voted for him and to have him as our President !! Go, Senator Obama !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

I think he was going for -----Once elected, the disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't live up to his greatness. "Phenomenally inhuman and unconstitutional"--given his intense aversion to President Bush, and lack of a candidate, he might mean Obama's voting for the war funding.

Whether they're endorsing a liberal or a conservative candidate (or cause), I question the authority of any non-political celebriity to have their opinion taken as any more important than anyone else's.

Okay -- I happen to agree with Sean Penn's politics, more or less (a little less than more, but I'm not going to quibble). There's still nothing in his background that says I need to listen to him, especially. Zip.

It's sad that anyone would -- or would not -- vote for a candidate based on what one of these Hollywood idiots thinks.

I like Sean Penn, but I think he needs another drink.....

Awww, Frank, did the big, bad, ignorant Sean Penn diss your boss, St. Obama?

Penn is a pinhead to the Nth degree. He should stick to movies and let the folks with a clue handle real life.

I'm not sure I'd trust the Telegraph on this - any coroborating sources?

According to another UK press association, Penn did not say that Obama "will never be" the greater man he needs to be.

He said: "I hope that he will understand if he is the nominee the dangerous disillusionment that will happen if he does not become a greater man than he's ever been."

I don't think people get Sean Penn's sense of humor. Steven Colbert had him compete in a Meta-Free-Phor-All when he appeared on the show. The Swamp should add a link to that hilarious bit.

Why can't you understand what Penn was saying? It isn't hard to comprehend--he meant Obama has been built up to this Jesus Christ like person, and he obviously will never be able to fulfill that if he becomes president.

Sean Penn talks strangely.... period!

I find the comments cogent. Penn is nervous about what he knows about Obama's record and is saying that he is being elected on the promise of great things and he had better deliver because it really matters in our time in history and in the context of this primary election (that has divided the nation). Got all that?

"I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the degree of disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be," Penn said. "This is the most important election, certainly in my lifetime, and maybe ever."

Huh? So what is Penn saying here, that because Obama is black that he will have to excel even further than a white man if he were president. Penn has never set such barr for any other potential president, so why for Obama? "The degree of disillusionment..."? What will Obama need to do to not have Sean Penn disillusioned? Look out his window on January 21st and see no more homeless on the streets? Visit a veterans home on January 22nd '09 and see every single Iraqi veteran being taken care of? Give me a break, Penn. Why haven't you done anything all these years to get George Bush out of the white house then, big bad Sean Penn! Typical.

Sean Penn's greatest film was certainly "Dead Man Walking". The best thing about that film was its open mindedness about the death penalty. While the story about the nun (Sister Helen Prejean) who befreinds the inmate, but also has some regrets about not taking the victim's family in account initially, leaves the viewers to make up its own mind.

Sister Helen, in real life, however, should be considered a Saint for her relentless crusade against the death penalty. She truly lives up to the Biblical teachings of forgiveness and compassion. Especially the part of Christ's teaching that "Whatsoever you do to the LEAST of my brothers, that you do unto ME".

ITS OUT OF CONTEXT TO SOUND BAD AND HURT OBAMA YOU NEED TO READ WHAT HE SAID..DUH

See no confusion on Mr. Penn's words. It's just a personal way of using English to express his reticence on adhering to any of the contenders. Just fair and wise.

Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama have many similar traits as politicians. Lincoln was a savvy political operator with little Washington experience (2 years as a Congressman) and no executive experience either. The only difference is that Lincoln's brilliant mind was forced to rise to the occasion of unifying a country in order to fight a civil war. Great men, great Americans, are made by the circumstances in which they find themselves. Regardless of Penn's bizarre statement, I pray to God that neither America nor Obama is ever challenged to that degree again. I'd sooner have my president be less than he is capable of being in a nation at peace, than one that is not.

Thanks for the endorsement....stick to the script.

Not strange really. Maybe Penn is being cautiously optimistic. Lets face it, the media whirlwind that took over re BHO was, and is greater than BHO's voting record, knowledge and experience. If BHO is the lesser of three crapy evils, he WILL have to become a much better man than he already is in order to be, at least, a decent president, and not to disenchant us in, what he has portrayed will be, a new Camelot.

Obama is a flawed candidate. Citizen Penn, immune to ad campaigns because of his years in Hollywood, sees through the Glitz to the record of the candidate.

Sean, the most important election of your lifetime, and maybe ever, was in 2000. Everybody lost.

Now, remind me again... How many times did Sean Penn plead "no contest' for punching photographers?
Violence begets violence.

What the heck is he talking about?

I don't know. But this I do know.

Penn was right on IRAQ when NO ONE else was.

Remember all of the criticism he received for meeting with Saddam Hussein?

That took a TON of guts.

Bush then shocked and awed the Muslim world, and 5 months later he accomplished his mission.

Bottom line: Bush says what he means and it costs us billions - and eventually trillions - in blood and treasure.

Sean talks gibberish but if we can decode it we can possibly save ourselves from further humiliation.

Well, if the boyz club trying to keep the BEST candidate left standing (Hillary) outta da white house keeps it up---maybe we oughta think about Sean Penn.
1. ACTUALLY WAS A PLAYER BEFORE THE WAR (unlike obama who re videotaped his silly anti war speech that nobody heard)
2. Actually DID SOMETHING for New Orleans as opposed to obama who ENDED Tavis Smiley's career for asking why he wouldn't come to his even in New Orleans.
3. Sean Penn isn't a selfish, consdescending person.

Actually, what I interpret from Penn's cryptic message is this: Obama's voting record in support of partial birth abortions is "inhuman" and it was later struck down by the high court as "unconstitutional".

Being in an industry where Democrats are chic and Republicans (in front of the cameras) are seen as bit actors, he is couching his support for McCain.

I think it is courageous of him in an odd sort of way to tell his fans his true feelings while keeping his creds with his Hollywood pals.

This must be the only interpretation possible… what else could he have meant?

Go McCain!
