Box Office Forecast: 5/29-5/31

pixar up balloons.jpgThree dimensional and scary, with a chance of meltdown. If you caught my prediction in my previous Monday Movie Quarterback, you know that I called last weekend's Hollywood box office 4/5, with stupid "Dance Flick" ruining my perfecta. This week should be a little bit more tricky.

Disney/Pixar's "Up" seems like a lock to take the number one spot, but something about an old man in a house makes me hesitate a little bit. Families and kiddies might be drawn to take another spin with Ben Stiller's "Night at the Museum" sequel. But there is one big reason that won't happen.

It's simple, actually - Pixar. They've built such a brand of hit animated films that no matter WHAT they open, it'll open big. Kids will be there to see the cartoon characters goofing around, adults will be there to bring out their inner child and stare in amazement. "Up" might not have the initial draw when looking at a poster, but it's one of the best reviewed movies of 2009, and barring a huge turn of events, a lock to end up in my Top 10 of '09. WGN's Dean Richards loved it as well. Watch his Dean's List review here.

drag me to hell witch.jpgSo #1 and #2 should be easy - from there it's dicey. The other big new movie of the week is director Sam Raimi's "Drag Me to Hell" (tasty photo on the right). Reviews are beyond positive, but I'm still not sure if there's enough awareness to catapult it up the chart.

So, can "Star Trek" maintain its Vulcan grip on the #3 spot? Will "Terminator: Salvation" transform its way into a monster bust? Will Tom Hanks hair retain its luxurious volume and brilliant shine? Before I get in more trouble, here's my Top 5:

1. "Up" (Pixar. That's all I have to say)
2. "Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian" (Family hangover from last week)
3. "Drag Me to Hell" (The only horror fare in theaters - unless you count T4, but that's more horror-ble. *drum hit*)
4. "Star Trek" (Great movie with great hold. Hanks eat your hair out)
5. "Terminator: Salvation" (Fine. Don't listen to me and go see this movie. You'll be sorry!)

I'll see you all right here next week to break it down in the Monday Movie Quarterback!
