2009 Taste of Chicago Preview!

|
The city hosted a special preview of the big event in Daley Plaza today, and for the first time it was open to the public. There were 6 booths in the plaza, showcasing restaurants from across the city. Among those you saw on our broadcast were....

Blue Bayou (photo at left)

Home of the world famous Gator Sausage on a Stick! That's right - real alligator on a stick. I found that more people have indulged in reptile than I thought. Today was my first time, and I have to say I found it somewhat enjoyable. It's a bit too gamey for me, but their gator to pork to spice ratio was pretty much there. Definitely worth a sample, and plenty were in line today to try it out.

Sabor Latino
3400 W. Fullerton
773.276.3524

Home of the Jibarito, a delicious latin sandwich that uses fried plantains instead of bread. Packed in between you have steak, lettuce, mayo, cheese and a special garlic sauce. Borinquen at 1720 California also does an awesome jibarito, so awesome that Esquire magazine declared it one of the best in America.

Garrett's Popcorn

Garrett's is hitting the taste for the first time with their frozen popcorn on a stick (yes, more stick action). It's flash frozen using liquid nitrogen and smokes when you eat it. Whoa!

Manny's Deli

Hard to believe, but Manny's Deli has never been to the Taste (at least not as a vendor). They'll be serving up their barbecue beef brisket, which they actually sold out of at the preview today. Also on hand will be President Obama's favorite cherry pie, along with a BBQ turkey leg. After all, what would the Taste be without a giant mass of meat ready for gnawing off the bone?
