Lolla 2009: Day 1 Recap

| | Comments (0)
As Depeche Mode bellows out in the background, Lollapalooza Day 1 is nearing a close. Overall, it was a pretty average day for the Grant Park Lolla Saga. But a great picture is worth so much more than what I can tell you...re-live the day with the RedEye's photo gallery.

Mud.jpgIt was the first day the fest has seen large amounts of rain. The result? Let's just say I hope you're not in a softball league at Grant Park, it'd be like playing outfield at Woodstock '94. The field looks absolutely trashed. We'll see if this tremendous heatwave coming through will help dry things up.
As for the music, Depeche Mode went head to head with Kings of Leon to close out the night. But some of the smaller acts made a name for themselves. Frat Rapper Asher Roth dove from the stage and joined his devoted fans...literally.

asher roth 1.jpgHe jumped down into the photo pit and busted out some profanity-laced flows with hundreds of hand-waving teens surrounding him. It was my first experience with Mr. Roth, who played one of the smaller side stages. Something tells me we'll be seeing this guy on a big one someday soon.

There were a tragic moment. A man passed away after sudden cardiac arrest, something Lolla organizers have been dreading, especially considering the rough weather coming through this weekend. Let's hope people excersize some personal responsibility when it comes to alcohol consumption over the next few days. The Tribune's Greg Kot wrote a piece about the protocols Lolla has set up to help deal with any problems. Read it here.

On a lighter and somewhat idiotic note, we had a few streakers try to hop onto some stages, and plenty of people busting out, having a great time. I've compiled a few videos for you.

First, we have a bust up during transition. As thousands of fans moved from one side of the park to another, they dodged the mud, but also ran into this gentleman, who decided he was ready to get down and dirty right there...

Then, there was the psychedelic dance thump put forth by Crystal Castles, who performed at the Vitamin Water stage this afternoon. Plenty of people tore up the park along with the music...

But I've saved the best for last. This guy had everybody in the media area cracking up when I brought back the video. He was in his own world, jamming out at Perry's stage. I leave Lollapalooza 2009 Day 1 to rest with the WORLD'S BEST DANCER!
