Monday Movie Quarterback 8/24: Heil Misspelleeng!

basterds 1.jpgIt was the biggest weekend of director Quentin Tarantino's career, or at least the biggest weekend he's likely to remember. "Inglorious Basterds," complete with its improperly spelled title and awesome Brad Pitt southern accent, took a baseball bat to the head of its competition with a $38 million weekend. It's been a good few weeks for the lower budget fare. IB cost only $70 million (how sad is it that I can put the word "only" next to "$70 million"), meaning it made back half of its budget this weekend alone. Congrats to my favorite Spaz of Cinema on the major return. Here's how the rest of the box shaped up.

1. "Inglorious Basterds" - $38 million

2. "District 9" - $18 million

3. "G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" - $12 million

4. "The Time Traveler's Wife" - $9 million

5. "Julie & Julia" - $8 million

I've taken a few weeks off the movie blog, counted up all of my losses and settled some debts. Let's predict what's going to happen next weekend...

final destination 3.jpgWeather wise, it definitely feels like October here in Chicago. As if that wasn't confusing enough, two movies primed for Halloween-season will be hitting theaters. "The Final Destination" was produced in 3-D, but will it feature a one dimensional story? It wasn't screened for critics here in Chicago, and we all know what that means, don't we?

halloween 2.jpgWe also have another Rob Zombie movie opening, "Halloween 2," not to be confused with "Halloween II." At least the remake of the sequel stayed away from using the periodic table in its title, a la "Halloween: H20 - 103 Elements of Stupid."

Can either of these movies actually take the top spot? No "Final Destination" film has ever cracked #1, but this one is in 3D, a gimmick that catapulted "My Bloody Valentine 3D" to a big opening weekend.

Rob Zombie's first "Halloween" remake killed, opening #1 with a big $26 million take. But that was in October. People like the smell of human entrails in October. Any time else it's kinda gross, right? Here's my weekend prediction:

1. "Halloween 2" - Because it's never too early to absolutely ruin your dreams.

2. "The Final Destination" - It sucks.....IN 3D!!!!!!

3. "Inglorious Basterds" - Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi party.

4. "District 9" - Remember when that guy spit black mucous all over his birthday cake? That was awesome.

5. "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" - The best action figure movie since "The Time Traveler's Wife."

See you next week to break it down.
