Thumbnail image for final destination 3.jpgIt was a milestone for the "Final Destination" franchise. For the first time, one of its entries opened #1 at the box office. So what put this one over the top? No, not the girl having her face removed in the car wash. It was the girl having her face removed in the car wash - IN 3-D! Here's a review from the "Movie Monster." If you were wondering what stunk during your screening (besides the movie), it was probably him.

Once again my predictions were slightly off. Here's how the box office came in:

1. "The Final Destination" - $28.3 million
2. "Inglorious Basterds" - $20 million
3. "Halloween II" - $17.4 million
4. "District 9" - $10.4 million
5. "G.I. Joe" - $8 million

Now let's lose another mortgage and put our money on some returns next week....

all about steve.jpgNext weekend looks impossible to predict. My first instinct is to vault the romantic comedy "All About Steve" to the top. It's got Sandra Bullock, who earlier this year opened a #1 rom-com even though it starred Ryan Reynolds. I still believe she deserves a medal for that. But this one stars Bradley Cooper, who won over America's hearts and headaches in "The Hangover." This one should clean up.

Now it gets dicey. Gerard Butler's "Gamer" looks a little too weird to grab a big audience, but it's target audience might be large enough to take in a good haul. Then there's the new Mike Judge ("Office Space") comedy "Extract." "Office Space" wasn't all that big a hit in theaters, neither was his follow up "Idiocracy." Judge's movies seem to finally click when they hit DVD or run on Comedy Central - and the marketing on "Extract" seems to be kind of goofed up. Why hide Ben Affleck? On second thought, don't answer that. We'll see if it backfires.

So here's my prediction:

1. "All About Steve" - Get it? "All about Eve?" Something tells me this movie will be just as nauseatingly clever. Is that a word?
2. " Gamer" - Might compel real-life gamers to get out of the basement and live out their fantasy of hunting the deadliest game of all - man.
3. "Inglorious Basterds" - Wait. World War II didn't end like that! Did it?
4. "The Final Destination" - More accurately titled "The Final Final Final Final Destination."
5. "Extract" -  Funny on paper. Baaaaaaad trailer:

See you next week to break down what went wrong.
