Out with the old, in with the new

I like Thursday's trade. It gives them more offense, something they have lacked since Ben Wallace was in the line-up. The Bulls were playing four against five without a lot of production out of the center. You get Drew Gooden whose been a double-double guy with points and rebounds. Then you got Larry Hughes who scored 40 points in game earlier this year. They both should really help.

Was the Trade for Now or Later?

This trade is interesting in that it remains to be seen whether it was made for now or for the future. It could be both. Trying to incorporate new players into a system with only 29 games remaining is not easy, but in a weak Eastern Conference it is doable.
I think the trade is probably more for the future...as John Paxson said, it frees up the organization to make more moves during the off-season.

Can either Larry Hughes or Drew Gooden be part of a Bulls lineup next year or beyond? That depends on what happens around them...are they part of a future deal? If not, then certainly Hughes and Gooden have both proven that they are NBA caliber players, especially Drew Gooden who gives the Bulls a lot more offense at the power forward position than anyone that the Bulls have had in quite some time.

Game Notes For Friday vs. Nuggets

* Denver and Chicago have alternated wins and losses over the last seven games in the series; should the pattern continue, it would be the Bulls’ turn for a victory.
* The Nuggets have won four of their last five road games.
* The Bulls have not won more than two games in a row all season.
* In the month of February, Kenyon Martin is averaging 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, with a .600 field goal percentage.
* Through January 15, Andres Nocioni was scoring 13.8 points per game and making 34.4% of his three-point attempts; in his 17 games since then, he has averaged 17.1 points per game and shot .402 from beyond the arc.

Game Notes For Wednesday @ Nets

* These teams faced each other in their first game of the season, with New Jersey emerging with a 112-103 overtime victory. The win pushed the Nets’ record to 18-5 versus Chicago since the 2001-02 season.
* The Bulls are looking to win their second straight game for the first time since late December. They have yet to win three in a row this season.
* The Nets begin their “post-Jason Kidd era”. Since Kidd joined New Jersey in 2001-02, the Nets were 292-214 when he played, as opposed to 11-28 when he didn’t.
* Ben Gordon could return from his wrist injury on Wednesday. If he does, the Bulls will regain the player with the league’s highest free-throw percentage in the fourth quarter (.947, minimum 25 FTA).
* Luol Deng has posted double-doubles in each of his last three games against the Nets, when he’s averaged 20.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
* Sean Williams has hit 19 of 24 shots (.792) in his last four games. He’s also blocked at least two shots in each of those contests.

What can Brown do?

So how will the addition of new Bulls big man coach Mike Brown help the young Bulls?
Well the one thing he can help Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah and Aaron Grey with is footwork. Its hard to help them with anything else within their shot. But he will work with getting their footwork together around the basket and making sure their not crossing their legs or getting caught in awkward positions. Maybe he can help with some defensive stances as well.

The Long and Winding Road Trip

When you take a look at it, despite all the ups and downs of this season, the Bulls have not cashed it in. You have Gordon, Deng and Hinrich out with injuries and yet the Bulls to go Golden State and put up 114 points in that victory...their 3rd highest offensive output of the season. That shows you that the players reached deep within themselves to pull off that upset victory. Chris Duhon is playing on a sore knee, Joe Smith continued his consistent play and Thabo Sefolosha brought a lot of energy on the defensive end.
The Bulls put up two great efforts on back-to-back nights in Portland and Oakland without their 3 best players.
I think we are looking at a team that has not given up and is determined to get better.

Game Notes For Thurs @ Warriors

* Chicago has lost in its last eight trips to Golden State, having not won there since the 1997-98 season (Michael Jordan’s last with the team).
* The Bulls will be playing their fifth game of a six-game road trip, having gone 1-3 thus far.
* The Warriors rank second in the NBA in scoring (109.6 per game) and have scored 100 or more points in 12 straight games, the longest such active streak in the league.
* Baron Davis scored a career-high-tying 40 points when these teams met in Chicago on Jan. 18 (119-111 GS win).
* Chris Webber is expected to be in the starting lineup tonight for the Warriors. Webber won Rookie of the Year honors in his one season with Golden State (1993-94) before being traded to Washington the following offseason.
* Joe Smith is averaging 20.5 points on 16-of-31 shooting (.516) in the Bulls’ last two games.
* Filling in for the injured Ben Gordon (wrist) Wednesday night, Thabo Sefolosha scored a career-high 22 points. Gordon will likely miss tonight’s game as well.

What Have YOU Been Doing for the Last 20 Years??

Jerry Sloan is the longest running head coach with the same team in all the four major professional sports. He was hired in December of 1988 and is approaching the 20th anniversary of that hire later this calendar year. The way Utah has rebuilt their team from the John Stockton/Karl Malone era is a credit to Jerry Sloan and the system that he runs. Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer are now the point guard and power forward in Sloan's system.
The success that Jerry Sloan has had in his career in Utah clearly establishes his credentials as a Hall of Fame coach when that time comes.
It takes a special coach to stay this long in the same place, but it also takes committed ownership that believes in Jerry Sloan and the system that he runs.
