The Curtain Goes Up

Opening Night in any sport is a special event, not just for the fans, but everyone involved.   You've spent about a month getting ready, players practice every day and play exhibition games.  So you can't help but be excited when the Opener finally arrives.

I have a couple of special ones that stand out.   Opening Night in Miami in 2006 was a big one.   The Heat had won their first-ever title the summer before with Shaq and Dwyane Wade.   The Bulls drew the assignment of playing them on their ring ceremony night and completely blew them out of their own gym...I think it was as lopsided as any opener as I've ever seen.

Another one that I remember was the Opening game in 1995.   Michael Jordan was returning for his first full season after coming back late in the 1994-95 season.   The play-off loss to Orlando was still a sore spot for him, so I think he had some revenge on his mind.   The Bulls had just traded for Dennis Rodman, so we knew this could be a special season, but no one thought they would go on to win 72 games and set an all-time record.

I am also looking forward to tonight's game...the first without Derrick Rose since he entered the league in 2008.  I want to see how the players respond without Derrick and I know they are anxious to prove that they are a good team, even with Derrick sidelined.

The Bulls are Back!

Thumbnail image for Stacey King.jpgHappy Halloween to all my Peeps out there. The 2012-13 season is here and I can't wait for it to get started. After finishing last season with the best record in the East the Bulls face a greater challenge this season. No D. Rose. The loss of Derrick was the main topic surrounding the team during the off season. How they respond with out him will be the true test of this team. Kirk Hinrich is back. Omer Asik, C.J. Watson, Ronnie Brewer and Kyle Korver are gone. Also joining the team are veterans Nazr Mohammed & Nate Robinson. First round pick Marquis Teague, Marco Belinelli and Vladimir Radmanovic fill out the roster. A full season of NBA basketball is a great thing and tonight the Bulls get it started! Chicago viewers can catch all the action tonight with Bullseye at 6:30 followed by Neil Funk and myself making the call at 7pm.

Bulls Game Notes For Wednesday vs. Kings

| | Comments (0)

* Chicago has won its last four, and seven of its last eight, games against Sacramento.

* Sacramento liked to push the tempo in 2011-12, its 18.7 fast break ppg ranking second in the NBA (Denver - 19.8). The Kings were 16-21 last season when they had at least 18 fast break points, as opposed to 6-23 when they had 17 or less.

* The Bulls led the league in scoring defense last season, allowing just 88.2 points per game. That was the fewest ppg allowed by the Bulls since at least the 1970-71 season.

* DeMarcus Cousins averaged 18.1 ppg and 11.0 rpg last season for the Kings, becoming the franchise's first player since Chris Webber (23.0/10.5) in 2002-03 to put up at least 18 points and 10 boards per game. Cousins averaged 21.5 ppg and 14.5 rpg in two games against the Bulls in 2011-12.

* Derrick Rose is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break after undergoing surgery on a torn ACL suffered during the first round of the 2011-12 playoffs. The Bulls went 18-9 in the 27 regular-season games Rose missed last season.

* The Bulls signed Kirk Hinrich in the offseason and he is expected to be the starting point guard until Derrick Rose returns. Hinrich, who spent his first seven NBA seasons with Chicago, is the franchise's all-time leader in three-point FGM (812) and is fourth in team history for career assists (3004). He is coming off his worst NBA season, averaging 6.6 points and 2.8 assists per game in 48 games with the Atlanta Hawks. He suffered a groin injury late in the preseason, but expects to play in the season opener.

Pre-season Protocol

| | Comments (0)

Coach Tom Thibodeau knows who will make up his starting unit once the season gets underway on Halloween night, but with 6 or more new faces coming off the bench, Coach Thibodeau is trying to put together a cohesive 2nd unit during the course of the pre-season.

This 2nd unit will need to have chemistry and Tom needs to have confidence that when he goes to his bench they will be able to hold a lead, or cut into a deficit...depending on the game situation.

This is accomplished by trial and error...believe it or not.   Tom wants to see who can play together, that's chemistry.   The issues that I have noticed in the first 2 game is that the bench guys are having trouble getting shots.   In Champaign last night, Tom kept Kirk Hinrich out on the floor and he was able to get the ball to Marco Bellinelli and Nazr Mohammed for key shots late in the game.
